Underwhelmed

Our backyard could use some improvement - planting for privacy, removal of rotary clothesline etc. All beyond my physical ability and know-how. We are debating hiring a landscape designer or handyman.  We have a pretty good idea what we want but, yeah, we are amateurs. Does professional landscaping by itself give a good return on investment? (Ignoring kitchen, bathroom etc)
curb appeal very important.
landscaping part of the package, if its done already prospective buyers will take into account,
as they wont need to be dropping further money on it. keep it simple, uncluttered and easy to maintain.

No it doesn't increase the price you get for the house, but it does make it easier to sell. We had a lot of landscaping done on our last house, but we did it for our enjoyment and not to increase what we got for the house when we sold it. Which was just as well because we didn't make a fortune on the house but it did sell quickly.
It is definitely worthwhile employing a landscape gardener. They will know how to use plantings to balance the appearance of your garden and make it interesting and inviting. And, just as important, they can advise which plants should be removed. To help you choose someone, ask if you can view a property they've worked on.

Landscaping won't necessarily get you a better price, but it will make the property much more attractive and easier to sell.
A beautiful garden sells a house, but often the new buyers have no idea of the work involved and it all goes to rack and ruin within months.

It pays not to go back.

Enough to cover the cost of the work?

Yes. So long as you don't pay too much.
Absolutely! Professional landscaping can definitely increase the sale price of your home. A well-maintained and beautifully designed outdoor space can instantly boost your property's curb appeal and make it more attractive to potential buyers. It creates a lasting first impression, and often, that's what sticks in a buyer's mind. Plus, a lush and inviting garden can make your home feel like a retreat, which is a huge selling point.
And... Don't go back afterwards. Sez she speaking from experience, after making 19 gardens, each of which sold the house, but didn't last long after the event.

Low maintenance. That is the way to go, lol...

I never learned that lesson.

I wonder if the OP did the professional thing and sold on that basis? Be interesting to know...
