The Great Wall was the northern frontier of ancient China and travels through desert and mountains.

The local name is the Stone Dragon. Legend has it that a dragon flying over China got tired and flopped onto the ground here. In reality it was started by China’s first emperor over 2000 years ago. It took 2500 years to build. They used conscripted labour and it’s estimated that over a million people died building it. Some people say it’s the largest cemetery on earth.

It was built to stop the Nomadic intrusion. It is 5500 miles long.

Before this wall there were fifteen other walls going back as far as 300BC so this is the new one and dates from the mid 1300s to the mid 1600s. There were 120 enlisted men per mile. It also became a road for shipment of supplies.

They didn’t want to face superior Nomadic horsemen in open field battle. They said “If we’re going to face you, we’ll do it on our terms.”
