Looks like a die clash on the rupee - there are traces of VI following the Y of COMPANY.

I only buy in JBL 1/2 price sale!
This grinds my gears a little, when I sold this very item at the going rate of $42 just a few weeks ago:

Interesting, front and back printer's models!

yes but only stupid people would pay that much, and you don't want to take advantage of people's stupidity? Unless of course they are stupid AND rich, like the numpty who bid way over the price for that Waitangi Crown on trademe! (to be fair there were actually 2 numpties bidding on that occasion!) . I wonder if they've paid for it yet? I guess it is legally binding. I've not seen the coin back on the market yet, and being a nosey bugger I've also checked feedback to see if there is any evidence of a completed transaction. Mind you, if I'd paid that much over the price I'd be so embarrassed I'd probably want to keep it secret too!

A lot of that can be put down to Lucas in lieu of an electrical system.

The NNP (Newman Numismatic Portal) Symposium is on now - talks are on from now (in fact, from a couple of hours ago), and registration is free for Zoom access. I've just been watching a talk about collector Harry W. Bass now, and there's a lot more between now and Sunday, NZ time. Remember the session times are US Central and Eastern so you need to do the maths [Image: 1f642.png] Register here:

I wonder if this will get bid up way beyond its price?

Interesting - presumably an estate lot, as I know who copy #77 was sold to.  There may have been only 220 printed, but around 1/3 of that total is still available new from the publisher (the first of the listings quoted above).  NZ collectors don't seem to be readers on the whole any longer, more's the pity.

What thoughts are you after? :-)  Looks good - I wasn't familiar with the maker's mark on the rim.  This medal was written up in the NZNJ about 15 years ago - the issue it was in should be available free online from RNSNZ.org.nz.

thanks Martin, all this time I'd not realised NZNJs were available for free online! It says the name of the awardee is inscribed on the edge so it would appear this ebay example is likely a specimen? Question would be how many are there, and in what year where they minted. Name change from NZ Institute to Royal Society of NZ occurred in 1933 so maybe there were a few left over from then? I'm very tempted to bid but suspect there would be buyers willing to pay a lot more than me, and always get a bit nervous importing expensive items into NZ. Maybe RNSNZ can organise a whip-round of members and we can get it returned to NZ? As a non RNSNZ member I volunteer to be a neutral to look after it!
There's been some bidding activity on the Hector medal. I'm pretty sure I know who the first bidder is (can tell by feedback count). The second bidder is interesting. They have zero feedback. So either it's a freshly created account, or they just hadn't bid much yet. I'd suspect they are likely to be an NZer, perhaps a relative newcomer to the scene who hasn't felt the need to join ebay up till now?(pandemic seems to have led to a decrease in NZ ebay numismatic activity). It would be good if Hector came back to NZ but I have a feeling some very rich overseas collector with an interest in NZ might end up grabbing it!
Hector didn't go for as much as I thought it would. Maybe a lot of potential buyers missed it? It is significant both as a medal in itself and also because it inspired the design of the shilling, so it should have had a wider appeal to both the medal and the coin collector.
There is a well known product called MS 70 coin brightener/cleaner. It is best used on AU+ or proof coins and gets very good mentions in the coin forums. Many years ago I managed to import a couple of bottles but it does not seem possible to get it into NZ now. So I wondered if there was an easy substitute to use instead.

The main ingredients of MS 70 appear to be

2-BUTOXYETHANOL
POTASSIUM HYDROXIDE, LIQUID

(copy link address and paste in new tab)

It might be possible to get the chemicals and mix them up but that is not something everyone wants to do.

However there is a possible substitute available in NZ

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/search?auto_...uaKlean%20

which seems to include the two main ingredients.

worth a try?

A well known NZ medallist suggested I try a 10% hydrochloric solution to bring up some medals that had been stained from sitting in a damp environment for a time.  Not brave enough to try it, however.
