NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - C_T_Russell - 06-10-2024 https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/10/06/navy-vessel-capsizes-off-samoa-after-fire-nzdf-confirms/ RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Oh_hunnihunni - 06-10-2024 I hope we clean up that mess. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - C_T_Russell - 06-10-2024 Apparently it struck a reef, how is this possible for a ship that is actually mapping the sea floor? RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - harm_less - 06-10-2024 (06-10-2024, 01:55 PM)C_T_Russell Wrote: Apparently it struck a reef, how is this possible for a ship that is actually mapping the sea floor?Guess they know where the reef is now though. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Oh_hunnihunni - 06-10-2024 On the edge of a 2 mile depth... RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - harm_less - 06-10-2024 There's going to be some serious questions asked about how this came about. A ship designed for hydrographic surveying will have a lot of the most modern and high tech sonar and other navigational equipment. There should be no way it would run aground other than by human error. Heads should roll! But then we have the coalition of ideological strategies and inability to take responsibility for their policies so I'm not holding my breath on the whole story seeing the light of day any time soon, unless they choose to somehow blame it on Labour ![]() RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - zqwerty - 06-10-2024 Yes it does seem a mysterious event considering the navigation gear they probably have present as it was recently refitted. It went down on fire as well which is also a bit strange. Could it be the usual story of crew members in charge having a tipple and not paying sufficient attention to what was happening to the ship or even worse being overcome by grog and asleep at the wheel??? LOL. More detail about the ship; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNZS_Manawanui_(2019) Notice 34 crew so lots of specialists on board since 75 rescued. Lots of partying maybe over the weekend LOL. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Oh_hunnihunni - 06-10-2024 C'mon guys... Human error is an assumption, not a fact. And nobody died. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - zqwerty - 06-10-2024 True nobody died but: Cost NZ$147 million 2018 That's a big waste for at the best, neglect. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Oh_hunnihunni - 06-10-2024 Depends. On what we see as a necessary investment. Defence? Be nice if we became the Switzerland of the Pacific. Appropriate considering the meaning of 'pacific'. Won't happen though. Too much money in making war. Or not. I feel sorry though for the careers that will be ruined over this though. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - nzoomed - 06-10-2024 Boy there are going to be a ton of questions to be asked about this for sure! Near new boat only built around 2019 from what I can tell doing survey work, hits a reef and catches fire then sinks. This is essentially another Rena disaster albeit with a much smaller ship but the risks of an oil spill will still be high. This is quite an embarrassment for the NZ government. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Oh_hunnihunni - 06-10-2024 Which is why she will find a sacrificial navy officer, and hang him out to dry, poor bastard... RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - zqwerty - 06-10-2024 The Captain who is ultimately responsibly was actually a woman who has been promoted very rapidly apparently under some program started by Jacinda. Very worrying to see how this may be interpreted. See here: https://www.nzdf.mil.nz/media-centre/news/yorkshire-woman-takes-command-of-royal-new-zealand-navy-ship/ RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Oh_hunnihunni - 06-10-2024 Or her... Or if they're fast, some poor ordinary seaperson. Nah, that just doesn't read right... RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - Lilith7 - 07-10-2024 Whatever the circumstances, this is clearly the fault of the previous govt.... From Wikipedia: The ship was originally a survey vessel for the oil and gas industry, entering service in 2003 as MV Edda Fonn. She was purchased for the Royal New Zealand Navy in 2018, and commissioned as HMNZS Manawanui on 7 June 2019. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMNZS_Manawanui_(2019) RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - harm_less - 07-10-2024 (07-10-2024, 01:23 PM)Bracken Wrote:So essentially a 'second hand Corolla'(06-10-2024, 08:17 PM)nzoomed Wrote: ... ![]() https://www.ship-technology.com/projects/edda/ I see she has storage capacity for over 1.1 million litres of marine oil (diesel) so likely to result in quite a significant spillage depending on how full she was when she sunk. RE: NZ navy ship on fire and capsized off Samoa - king1 - 07-10-2024 For a ship that was suppose to be getting up close and personal with a reef, I would have thought watertight compartments might be useful... Quote:"We bought Manawanui knowing she was not a war ship, she's a commercial operation... but with that comes a risk and the risk is that commercial vessels do not have the same level of redundancy in their systems or their design that warships do - you can't seal off compartments, create water tight compartments and keep the vessel afloat so that it can be towed, salvaged and repaired. A fast track bill to remove this govt might be somewhat more useful... ![]() |
