Hurricane Milton - harm_less - 08-10-2024

This hurricane is strengthening 'explosively' reaching an expected category 5 within around 24 hours. A lesson in how much energy has been absorbed by our oceans, which is now being released as an example of nature's real might.

Yes all losses in any system are released as heat.

In the case of the Earth all our activities caused by 8 billion or so, result in lots of losses which contribute to the extra heat now gathering in the ecosystem and especially the oceans.

This extra heat energy results in more active storm systems in general and one measure should be a greater number of hurricanes getting increasingly larger as time goes on over the years.

One thing occurred to me after the last US one. At least this time it isn't the nations least likely to be contributing to climate change which are feeling the effects.

This video shows the absolutely massive amount of garbage that Florida is dealing with in the wake of hurricane Helene. Hopefully this is collected to safe storage if Milton sweeps through the same region as that's one hell of a lot of potential projectiles for the forecasted 185+mph winds to throw around.

Florida warned of 'potentially catastrophic' Hurricane Milton impact

Make sure to take a look at the map of the path across Florida. "Where and when Milton is expected to hit"

Regarding the US politically demented comments claiming hurricanes are conspiratorial:

"The same people who say "human activity can't affect the climate" are now saying, "the government is creating hurricanes." " Rolleyes

Hurricane Milton: Florida braces for storm's landfall with huge evacuation under way

We flew over Hurricane Milton about 90 minutes ago. Here is the view out the Dragon Endeavour window. Expect lots of images from this window as this is where I’m sleeping while we wait to undock and return to Earth.

RE: Hurricane Milton - Lilith7 - 09-10-2024

The word used earlier on the news was 'unsurvivable' which doesn't bode at all well. I hope everyone can evacuate in time.

RE: Hurricane Milton - harm_less - 09-10-2024

The usual well explained no nonsense coverage from Weatherwatch, with times translated to the NZ timezone. That's one nasty weather system!

RE: Hurricane Milton - Lilith7 - 09-10-2024

That looks so scary, poor people. And their animals, I hope they take any pets with them & all get out of harm's way in time.

RE: Hurricane Milton - Zurdo - 09-10-2024

I have a cousin in Tampa...

RE: Hurricane Milton - Oh_hunnihunni - 09-10-2024

And Mexico? How are they doing?

RE: Hurricane Milton - Lilith7 - 09-10-2024

Hope your cousin's safely out of harm's way, Zurdo.

According to the news, Mexico is copping a fair bit, very strong winds but nothing like what's expected for Florida.

RE: Hurricane Milton - Zurdo - 09-10-2024

Just been on FB, he's evacuated to Savannah.

That's got to be a relief, pleased to hear it. Smile

Presumably they'll have buses etc, for those without transport. I just hope those needing to use them can take their pets with them; its a difficult situation as it is without the extra stress which might be caused by having to leave them behind.

Winds of that ferocity are one thing but 5m of storm surge adds a whole different dimension.
