I love some of the comments under this one, especially this one:

Don't you see? How beautiful it could be if all races, creeds, denominations, religions, theologies, nations, ideas, and above all, peoples got together instead of being apart. If the whole of humanity were to be as one body, we could accomplish so much more and beyond our dreams."

Yes we could Jonesy, we could. If we weren't such feckin' idiots...

What is the meaning behind goodbye horses?

According to William Garvey, who originally wrote "Goodbye Horses," "The horses represent the five senses discussed in the Bhagavad Gita and the ability to lift one's perception above these physical limitations and to see beyond this limited Earthly perspective.

Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses (7'' Version) *Remastered Audio*

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPOnoIlplg0

In 1986 Diane Luckey, a 25 year-old African-American woman who went by the name Q Lazzarus or simply Q, was living in NYC making music and driving a yellow taxi. One night she picked up movie director Jonathan Demme, and played her demo for him.

Goodbye Horses

He told me, "I see you rise"
But, it always falls
I see you come, I see you go
He say, "All things pass into the night"
And I say, "Oh no sir I must say you're wrong
I must disagree, oh no sir, I must say you're wrong"
Won't you listen to me
He told me, I've seen it all before
I've been there, I've seen my hopes and dreams
A lying on the ground
I've seen the sky just begin to fall
He say, "All things pass into the night"
And I say, "Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong
I must disagree, oh no sir, I must say you're wrong"
Won't you listen to me
Goodbye horses I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses I'm flying, flying, flying,
flying over you

I never knew the chorus was about the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita. In it, the five horses that pull Krishna and Pandava prince Arjuna's chariot, are symbols of the five senses. These five senses keep us tied to the physical/material plane of existence. When you can transcend the limitations of these senses and achieve a higher level of consciousness, you are leaving the "horses" behind - "flying over them." The song is about someone who was so affected by (A loss? A breakup?) they decide to give up the things that keep them tied to this world by emotion.

It makes sense why it was used in Silence of the Lambs. Bill wasn't a transgender person, as explained by Lecter. Instead, he didn't feel right in his skin and he wanted to transcend it in the most psychopathic way possible. Imposter syndrome and disphoria over oneself are as common to humanity as creating and imagining. It's that imagination that tells us there's always something more.

It truly is a beautiful song that'll sadly be a joke to most.

You haven't seen the movie, Silence of the Lambs? in which the song features. If you haven't you should watch it as soon as possible Lilith7
