As shown in the link above it is also worth noting that the cost of solar and wind generation is as cheap as it gets, and nuclear is on the opposite end of the scale and hugely expensive to develop.

I think solar has the most potential, but storage is needed at night.
Australia have Tesla battery banks installed to mitigate this. It proves the concept works.
Once ITER proves fusion is doable we will be on a home run.
In the meantime, nuclear has its merits. I would like to see breeder reactors become a thing. Its safe through its design and they can burn up nuclear waste and use it to generate power.
The beauty is less waste is generated and with a half life the fraction of the waste traditional reactors make.

In comparison Lake Onslow is expected to be able to hold between 3TWh and 8.5TWh depending on fill level.

The battery backups can be switched in very quickly so that there is no glitch or drop in the power supply, that is the main point of them, not to hold up a supply for a longer time, not like other backup systems which take time to be brought online but can hold up the line voltage for much longer.

Speaking of battery banks, im pretty excited about the sodium ion battery technology, they are coming to the market this year and can be made at a fraction of the cost of lithium, its best use case will be in solar installs and battery banks where energy density is not so much of a concern as it is in EV's.
Sodium is cheap and abundant, but whats even a bigger benefit is that these batteries can be made with existing equipment used to make Lithium Ion batteries.
And over time, we can expect each generation of these batteries to get better energy density over time.

Some distinct advantages over hydro but smaller in scale and not as easy on the eye as hydro lakes.
