bee duty! How cool is that Smile

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 01-02-2025

I'm hoping they stay. But if they do and anyone threatens them I will insist on a beekeeper collecting them. I can be quite insistent when I try...

And I have a sunburnt nose.

RE: You can never have enough... - Roma - 01-02-2025

Yes,  the reason I got in touch with a beekeeper ... to protect from stupid humans.  We left them alone on the farm ... the clever bees send out scouts to find a new, suitable home which they presumably disappeared to  Smile Amazing the amount of wax cells they build on wherever they've landed meantime!

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 01-02-2025

Id run a mile Hunni.. Hate bee's.. yes I know we need them but we dont all have to like them lol

I've prepped the Plums, will cook tomorrow. I do Delia smiths way of making Jam. Cut the fruit up, the juice of a lemon and the equal amount of sugar. Let it sit overnight and it draws all the juice out.

One Must remember to wear gloves if she does it again.. I dont usually cut plums up but I wanted to make sure there were No stones.

Took twice the time to cut the front lawn, soo many stalks and the lead isn't the best. Ill sharpen it before I do the back, which thankfully doesn't have as many stalks but has thicker grass . It looks like it might be fine till Wednesday so I might only do half tomorrow.

My school friends Daughter is getting married tomorrow, in a garden. The Nursery owners daughter.. the only instructions for the bouquets, which the workers are making not the Mother is No Roses.. so My friend doesn't even know what they are making.

Love the blanket Jan.. Im sure it will be treasured.

I have kept bees, hence my absolute love of the creatures.

And yes, they don't leave the hive till the new home has been sussed out. We multiplied our single hive three times with our own swarms, by providing new homes they couldn't resist. They are fantastic creatures. Humanity should learn from them.  Heart

I use two thirds sugar to one cup of fruit and add an apple if the fruit is low in pectin - along with the lemon. It is a very satisfying process. Unless it's strawberries. I have never had any luck with strawberries. Black currant though, now there's a quick setter...

I got married in my parents Taupo garden, under a late flush of Westerland. It was a lovely day, despite rain in the morning. The local firemen brought a tarp down ready to rig just in case, but it cleared. Good luck apparently. The rain, not the firemen, though I'm sure they were, lol...

I usually use the same re the sugar. But the plums are quite tart. And once I nuked one of the bit ugly lemons that I didn't think it would have much lemon, there was heaps. Only used one.

morning ladies Smile The fog is clearing, and the sun is out. It's going to be hot.

Love the blanket, Jan. I can see why this will be your last especially as you have done others. Any ideas of what you will do next?

A sunburned nose is a good price to pay for the bees, OHH Smile

We don't have any plums on our trees this year Sad But last year was madness, so maybe it's every second year the plums arrive. Love plum jam.

Housework for me today, the spiders need evicting again. But first I'll 'do the garden rounds' with the Furry One and clean and top up his outdoor water bowl and the bird bath.

Happy crafting Smile

RE: You can never have enough... - Roma - 02-02-2025

Good morning.

Another hot day in store but fingers crossed for the forecast rain later.

Yes, plum jam is  good. It's been a long while since I've done any preserving with no abundance of fruit/vege coming my way any more. KM I see that the local Orchard is no longer there and been turned into a new subdivision. I used to call in there first before the supermarket.

A lot of work in that blanket Jan ... it will be a lasting memory.

I hope the bees are still happy OHH. They are fascinating wee creatures.

No plan for the day. Back into school routine this week.

Enjoy the day all.

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 02-02-2025

Morning everyone.

Very overcast here. Please can the rain stay away until after the wedding.

Cant wait to see photos, not of the bride lol Of my friend. A guy we went to school with is a fashion designer and is making her dress. Hés probably the first gay guy we knew. And he is good.

I'll take this Tyre up to the recycle center this morning, then come home and make the jam.

Will mow later if it stays fine. Some of it anyway.

Want to see the finals of the Super smash cricket tho. So Ill see. I haven't seen this much cricket in years. and since I dont really know the teams names I want the one with Amelia and Jess Kerr to win the women's, and the one that one last night in the men's lol.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 02-02-2025

Pippins has long gone Sad roma. They have a shop in town, more a florist than anything.

The winter daphne is forming flowers. Smile I found them after I untangled it from the convolvulus. I hate that weed with a vengeance and have declared war on it.

Will run the vacuum over the floor then that's me, I'm done.

RE: You can never have enough... - Mica - 02-02-2025

Stopped for lunch been a bit of frog stitching ( ripit ripit)  argh..! Need a break so close to finish too. Spatially challenged thats me.

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 02-02-2025

I stripped the bed and left it all naked and rumpled with all the doors open so it could get a bit of a breeze up it... While the machine was doing its thing I watered the courtyard garden, and stole seed from the mirabilis - gosh those plants are magical things. Night scented, colour changing flowers, advantageous strikers, just treasures to have in my garden. Then being lazy I chucked the linens in the dryer and went back to ripping out the wandering violets that were blocking my broom swept leaf efforts, pretty thing, but the flowers are shy so I have no compunction about being mean to it.

All that bending woke up my old hip implant so in for coffee before slowly putting the bed back together in time for the cotton kantha quilt to come out of the dryer and go on top of those fresh sheets, oh the bed looks so good all put together and layered up. The duvet with its pretty cover has to stay all rolled up into a fat sausage along the bottom of the bed, it is just too hot at night for the feathers, even all fluffed down to the foot.

Two pots of peaches in the freezer, one raised garden emptied - well almost, the basil is still flowering and there are some fat tomatoes on the heritage plants in the big pot. Can't wait to see what colour they turn out to be. So time now for pleasant things while the cicadas sing - late this year, and not very many - I shall give my fountain pens some exercise with cursive practise, though I am not convinced my skills are improving very much. I am enjoying those coloured inks though!

And just between thee 'n me - the bees are still in the hedge...

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 02-02-2025

I heard the cicadas for the first time on Friday Hunni.. I thought they must have been late.

I've had the odd cricket come in. Cant stop them cos they come under the garage door. I often find dead bodies when I vacc under the spare beds.. Very seldom they come into the lounge or my bedroom.

Made the Jam. May have cooked it a bit long but Ill take my bread and marge and jam with me tomorrow they can have some toasted for pudding if they feel like it. I've got to get more cheese before I can make the scones. We do at least have a toaster in our dining room, that the Main dining room doesn't.. Most likely cos one of the residents put it there.

Its turned into a Beautiful Day. Im sure the Bridezilla has managed to have a beautiful wedding Day. Her Mother reporting on the moods lol.

I've been watching the cricket and reading through cookbooks. Haven't found anything I want to make tho, without having to get more ingredients.

David said he found a Plum Sauce recipe and it has mace in it.. I had a quick look when I was in new World, he wont be getting it there.. Does anyone here know what it tastes like?

I've asked if he has an Edmonds Cookbook. if not he can have one of Mine. I have several.

OH Yay breakfast is back on tomorrow.. Im guessing cos of the lack of Daniel Fi Tawa (Make no apologies for not spelling that correctly, I haven't a clue) that perhaps he wont be on it any more. he was turning into a right creton anyway. All about Me me me from him. I cant stand that.

Mace is the outer coating of the nutmeg seed. Expect some similarities between the two but mace is spicier and more peppery.

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 02-02-2025

I Just googled it. It sounds interesting. More fruity than I expected.. but I can understand why it would be used in Plum sauce since its a fruit base anyway.

Too bad I dont like Plum sauce so wont be tasting it..

Wonder if he managed to find some

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 03-02-2025

morning ladies Smile It was lovely to have some rain overnight, cooled things down as well.

I'm going to potter about in the garden for a while this morning. The possum from the other night has damaged a couple of plants. A quick prune and tie back should help. And we have some tomatoes and a cabbage for each of our nieghbours.

I've had a thought (MrK says... careful now! lol) about the embroidery piece I'm doing. It's a crewel design but I'm stitching it in floss as I don't have any heavier fabric for crewel wool. I thought it could be part of a lid on one of the gorgeous wooden boxes MrK makes. He likes the idea Smile so I'll need to get cracking and finish it. I have an idea of how it could work but need to think it through a bit more.

Happy crafting Smile

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 03-02-2025

Morning everyone

We have had rain overnight. But the roof is dry now.

No he didn't find any Mace. I suggested Binn Inn perhaps.. And he does have an Edmonds book, which I suspected since I found a plum sauce recipe in there, containing Mace. I saw that the Edmonds Books have been around for 70 years.

I picked the winners of the women's cricket Supersmash, but not the men's. I will miss it.

Off to see the girls today.

Have a wonderful day everyone

If he uses freshly grated nutmeg (not the pre-grated kind)  instead of mace the difference will be insignificant.  Pre-grated nutmeg is quite dull and can be stale and bitter.

Morning all
Sunny cloudless skies

Been to gym need to reassemble the vacuum cleaner and vacuum someone has left threads all through the house Tongue
DH off to golf later so I plannon starting to quilt the I spy quilt looking forward to it as haven't done any quiltingnfod few months now.

Feline has decided that being outdoors is fun, exits have become entrances(finally) she has been pouncing  all over our and neighnours roofs much to the enjoyment of our neighbours across the street.

Got to move vacuum then shower. I thiink I might freshen up my black jeans since running DHs grey jeans through dye bath worked so well.

Enjoy your day
