RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 15-02-2025

Went up to see mum. She is unresponsive now. But I washed her, and talked.

Colleen came up and held hands for quite a while. Took photos for Dianne.

Dianne is with Mum now.. This morning Mum ate nearly all her breakfast and Dianne spoke to her on the phone. Fitting that Dianne be the last one to talk with her.

Last night they turned her oxygen down to 1.5.. drs orders from the Hospital is that it should be 5... The idiots.. It was 5 when I was there.

I've told her to text if she needs me. Hubby is there with her but he's a stuffed shirt , stern man. I have no doubt that he loves her but he's too strong if that makes sense.

Im not a marmalade person but I used to make it all the time for various sales tables lol.

David was going home to make Plum sauce. But decided not to cos it took 3 hours lol.

Apparently he has a hospital appointment on Friday with the Osteo people.. I said Oh I didn't know you had arthritis, ohh I dont he said.. Guess he is still learning lol

A rather lovely thing happened this evening. You will recall my beloved was an angler, and a good one at that, and that he tied his own trout flies, and that I had held on to them for way too many years.

Well, I listed them and sold them to the Mum of a young man who was learning to fly fish with his grandfather. When they came to collect I met him and could see he was someone my husband would have liked. An earnest young man but excited by the all those feathery things on hooks. So I was happy to hand them over.

This evening I got an email from him with a photo of him holding his first fish, a nice wee rainbow, and the grin on his face said it all. Those flies still work it seems. Isn't that such a lovely thing for him to do?

I didn't know that Barkers makes a Morello cherry jam, my absolute favourite.   And New World has it on special at $4.69!   Barkers products are always good; a guilty shortcut for me is their apple sauce.

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 16-02-2025

morning ladies Smile  Rain please!

I would like to think your lovely man sent this young man to you for the flies, OHH Heart  What a lovely gesture, and how awesome the flies are being used again by a budding fly fisherman.  Another generation!

lol Olive, enjoy the cherry jam.  You can't always find it, but when I do, I grab it.

I bought the beetroot hummus from the supermarket made by a well known brand.  But it was waaaayyy too sweet and even MrK couldn't eat it.  When I read the label, it was 6% sugar.  I know beets are sweet, but that was ridiculous.  We love the lemon hummus and have it on toast with a thick slice of tomato and black pepper for lunch.

I finished my embroidery piece yesterday and washed it ready for lacing onto a board.  Will get on with that today so MrK can take the measurements for the box. I'll take a pic when it's done.

The Furry One is bashing my leg with his soft toy.  I can take a hint lol.  Better go and play with him for a bit Smile Heart .

Happy crafting Smile

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 16-02-2025

Morning everyone

I too believe your Husband will be guiding this young man.. What a lovely way to encourage the future generation.

Mum Passed last night at 7-30 PM.. Peacefully with her girls with her.. I was talking to David at the time. I decided to go up and check on Colleen and Annie last night as they were quite upset. They were ok and then I went in and sat with Mum for a while.
The girls dressed her in white. She was cool but the purple had gone. The Biggest honor for me was that they put the head bands and the Magnolia earrings on that I had given her.. She is also holding a part of the shirt Adam, Dianne's son died in, in her hands.

No Dr on call to do the final parts.. isn't that typical. So they are coming this morning.. I will go up. But will leave the girls to themselves for a while. They haven't had time alone with Mum yet. But Ill be there if they need me.

Hopefully Tania one of the best carers there will see Mum before she is moved. She loved Mum as much as we did. She said they are told not to get attached, but that was impossible with Mum.

Our Matriarch may be gone but will never be forgotten that's for sure. She showed me what a Real Mother is like.. Caring, loving and I Never heard a cross word from her. The only thing she did, of which David will never know, if he was going on at her about eating or just being his typical drunk self she would close her eyes and pretend she was asleep so he would shut up. lol

Rest in Peace Irene Roff. Run through the fields with your grandson. Fly free and Don't forget to wave. Visit the Queen now Mum.

KM, I've got a lovely recipe for beetroot hummus - would you like it?

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 16-02-2025

With no added sugar no doubt!

And yes, I think Colin was exercising a little management too. Wouldn't be the first time either. Which is one of the reasons I quite like the thought of crossing that mortal threshold! It'll be one hell of a catch up...

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 16-02-2025

yesss please, Olive. That would be great Smile

I can imagine family reunions on the other side lol.

Another jar of pickled onions on the go by MrK Tongue And I'm halfway with lacing the embroidery. It's freezing outside with a southerly so a good day to be doing this stuff.

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 16-02-2025

Yes, at this reunion I'll be giving a certain someone a good smack round the ear as well as all that other stuff, lol. Must've been a good marriage if all these decades later he can still make me laugh!

RE: You can never have enough... - Olive - 16-02-2025

Beetroot & Yoghurt Hummus

1 medium sized beetroot, cooked
125 ml tahini
2 tab extra virgin olive oil
juice 1 -2 lemons
small clove garlic, chopped
salt & pepper
1 c thick yoghurt

Purée beetroot, add all but yoghurt and amalgamate well. Beat in yoghurt.

Serve in flat bowl with oil and diced cucumber on top. Serve with pita or Turkish bread

Adjust salt and lemon to taste. I tend to use quite a lot of lemon juice, depending on the sweetness of the beetroot.

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 16-02-2025

yummm thank you, Olive.  Can't wait to try it with our beetroot Smile

I've finished the lid insert for the mahogany box MrK is going to make for me.  It's a crewel pattern but I don't have heavy enough fabric to stitch it with the crewel wool so used my regular floss instead.  Am quite happy with how it turned out.

RE: You can never have enough... - Jan - 16-02-2025

Kiwimade that’s stunning - you have made a perfect top for a box - reminds me of my grandmothers embroidered stool - handed it onto my grandaughter - needed a MrK to repair the wooden component - she found a lovely old tradesman at her nearby Men’s shed so it’s good to go another 100 years

Love your young fisherman story Hunni - love hearing about young people being brought up not believing the world owes them a living instead he took the time to show you he really did appreciate you enabling him to have those lovely flies

Popeye if you did decide to give advice and help to people in palliative care - you need to be very careful if you accept money or property -a local lady working at the hospice set herself up helping with plans etc - one family just took her to civil court she charged their Mum to plan her funeral and sort her estate requirements with Winz - she was entirely incorrect the funeral grant is income asset tested plus she mucked up the final wash up with Winz and the pension - the Mum planned a very expensive funeral which the family went ahead with and ended up out of pocket - they were very vindictive and sued her and won - she even has to pay their court costs

Art deco weekend has been fabulous until today - it’s a bit grey and drizzling- the steam train has been here love hearing that -

I missed your post, popeye, about Mum passing, I am sorry to hear this. She will be missed, that's for sure.

I've found a sketch my mother-in-law drew of roses, think that will be my next embroidery project. It will fit perfectly on the cabinet in the spare bedroom to help prevent the wood from bleaching further.

That's really beautiful KM.  It reminds me of the art work of Teuane Tibbo, the well known Samoan artist who worked in NZ.  Here's an example of her work (which these days sells for many thousands at auction).

RE: You can never have enough... - Jan - 16-02-2025

Tahini is another thing to make that is so easy to add to hummus - when you make it yourself especially if you toast the sesame seeds it just adds another pop for your taste buds to savour when you spread your hummus on your cracker
I was given a wee jar of kaffir lime leaf jelly - not sure how it was made - no sign of any leaf just a beautiful accompaniment to cheese - she wasn’t confident to share the recipe as it was very much trial and error - she also gave me a jar of lemon and ginger marmalade made with lemons off my tree - as a lemon lover it was right on
Just found out one of my Mums knitted dresses was on display at the Art Deco exhibition- must try and get a photo - we donated a lot of stuff to the museum nice to know it’s being looked after

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 16-02-2025

That's very similar to mine, just missing the chickpeas but adding the yoghurt. I guess that 's where the creaminess comes from.

There definitely are rules to be checked before offering any service, especially if taking recompense for it. Something I think quite a few young people do not understand when they offer their services as 'therapists' or 'consultants', or 'life coaches'. Even as a voluntary service responsibilities are assumed and Jan is right, those can be very weighty indeed. Pays to have a friendly solicitor on board as an advisor...

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 16-02-2025

Thank you everyone.

I certainly wouldn't want to end up in a mess like that.

David brought in some Kahlua I think it was, glasses and candles. we all lit candles and told a memory of Mum. Dianne said what if we set the smoke alarm off... then the Towns Fire Siren went off. We cracked up and I said I think Mum just showed us what could happen. It was soo funny.

I met the Daughter in the family funeral service place. Dianne said how they had done MrP and that mum was the fourth, I should be on commission lol;. The Lady laughed. Paul stepped in and helped them roll mum and wrap her in a shocking Pink sheet. She would have loved that.

Annie and Colleen are worried we will forget them. We both said never.. Ill go in Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday, and then We are all going in on Friday. Dianne is shouting us all fish and chips again.

We found Tania so we were both happy about that.

They are telling the great grandies shortly.
