RE: You can never have enough... - SueDonim - 22-04-2025 (21-04-2025, 07:30 PM)Oh_hunnihunni Wrote: Yes, my first thought was for my monarchs. Having just got a clutch to maturity I would be wary of losing them. Good to know though, if spot treating fails. And I might just hold off on seedling planting till we get a decent chill. With luck they are only foraging in a limited area and as the garden gets a really good south to north gale going the moths might have just hit the sheltered spot where I found the wreckage. All digits crossed. Looking at the MPI link - it's about Fall armyworm which is a new arrival and MPI were rightly concerned about its spread, although it looks like they have accepted that it is now here to stay. Looking at iNaturalist (https://inaturalist.nz/taxa/132468-Spodoptera-frugiperda), it has reports over a lot of the country but not many, and only one in the Auckland area. On the other hand, the similar Tropical armyworm (https://inaturalist.nz/taxa/124875-Spodoptera-litura) has been here much longer, is also very widespread and clearly very common over the mid to upper North Island. It's more likely to be the one you have. A photo on your phone can be uploaded to iNat for a proper ID (you'll need a login, but joining up opens up a whole new world of interaction with nature). For both links, click on the green "View all" to see where the reports have come from. If you do upload yours, make sure you obscure your location to keep your home address private. We had tropical armyworms in the garden a couple of years ago and a few caterpillars have popped up again this year. Yes, they eat plants like any other, but at least are big enough to be easily seen and dispatched. The spray mentioned above is very good to know and is probably an important resource for large or commercial crops, but even though it targets just moths, it is still targeting all moths so interrupting the biological balance. I think in the home garden dealing with caterpillars manually is all that needs to be done. I check under leaves when I'm in the garden and also when I'm out looking for snails at night. Although something that also gets the white butterflies may be worth a second thought.... RE: You can never have enough... - Lilith7 - 22-04-2025 Good luck with the move Popeye, hope it all goes smoothly & you get mostly settled in. Groceries done; just mede it home in time - thought it might rain but so far, nothing so hope it continues; we've had enough over the last few days. RE: You can never have enough... - Mica - 22-04-2025 Hope your move was smooth Popeye and that Missy isn't too stressed. Had a lovely time with DGS so easy take train into city, library, Whitcouls( bought 2 books buy one get one half price plus I had 10 credit ![]() Knit night so bootie knitting for me noticed the 3-6month container was low last week they need more gender neutrals so knitting up a soft grey worked out there is enough for 5 pairs RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 22-04-2025 My doctor asked to see me to discuss my medications, so I trotted off this afternoon to see her. Turns out the top left ventricle of my heart isn't as strong as the rest of my heart. No heart attack so she has no idea why. We are both hoping the cardiac team can explain it. In the meantime, I've been given more meds to take and this time it's a diabetic medication. New research has shown it will strengthen heart walls. Who knew lol. But it does make me pee a bit more than usual. The pharmacist was advising me as if I was diabetic lol and didn't know of the new research. We both learned something new today ![]() RE: You can never have enough... - Lilith7 - 22-04-2025 (22-04-2025, 04:28 PM)kiwimade64 Wrote: My doctor asked to see me to discuss my medications, so I trotted off this afternoon to see her. And no rain Yay.. God those blokes worked their butts off.. And they loved that everything was labeled and Dianne also helped direct stuff. Missy seems happy enough. I've shut her out of the two bedrooms for now. Until I can make some sense of order. One of the guys got my tv working too. So I phoned Sky and cancelled that. Will sort out the credit I have with them. And Cos I was using an older style box I can give it to the recycle center.. Which is good cos I broke one of the little doors off it lol. First to sort out is the kitchen.. but I fully intend on taking things slowly. Found my pills bedding and Drink and thats all I need lol. Pope Frances certainly worked to the end. RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 23-04-2025 Morning all, red sky at dawn today, more wet incoming? Surely not, it's Wednesday and I want my coffee and cake! And we have had enough of the wet stuff up here in the smoke... I checked my pots last night, and no more holey leaves, so I may have terminated the invaders, fingers crossed. And I have red onion seedlings for Africa as the saying goes. They obviously liked the wet... RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 23-04-2025 morning ladies ![]() Saw your post on FB popeye, great you are beginning to settle in. Moving is hard work! Fingers and everything crossed for you OHH, you may have caught them just as they were beginning to infest your garden. I've been reading (the Herald) the governments new roading announcement. They plan to build a new four lane highway for SH29 and our SH29 will be designated as a road and no longer a highway. I did the happy dance lol. Not just for those who are bottlenecked on this road daily but for us as traffic will be diverted and road will be quieter. The funding has been allocated, and they begin at Tauriko this year. We've been worried the government would want our property under that works act. But as MrK says, there are so many properties and businesses along our road it would cost as much to buy them all as to build the new road. It will take time but at least we know it is happening. Time to get cracking, grocery shopping today but first I have to do the morning garden 'rounds' with the Furry One ![]() ![]() Happy crafting ![]() RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 23-04-2025 Morning everyone Fine at present and chilly.. Madam is sitting on the back of the chairs looking through a pretty lace curtain. Shes quite happy this morning. I ache right down to my fingertips lol.. But Ill get the kitchen sorted today. Need to hook the washing machine up. I have red towels to wash lol... They are buried tho. but I have other washing to do. Dianne needed drugs last night too. I know she doesn't like to take pills but she was on her feet just as much as me yesterday. Hope you get your coffee and cake Hunni... Di went and got us a pie each yesterday. OMG it was good.. Just as good as the ones we love from Drury.. So now I dont have to wait till a trip to the clinic or hospital for a pie lol. Have a wonderful day everyone RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 23-04-2025 I was hoping you'd rest today popeye, but I remember moving, and I could never rest either! Too much arranging and putting away to do. But I think it takes about six months to make the new place into home, so take your time. And yes, weather looks okay, lunch out is definitely on the cards, and maybe a visit to the plant place... RE: You can never have enough... - Mica - 23-04-2025 Fine but cold southerly This is my 3rd attempt to post today last 2 just went poof KM hope medication improves your cardiac function. Popeye glad Missy is settling in you just moderate yourself unpacking OHH good no more holes in foliage. I must admitn had visions of you in the hours of darkness treating your neighbours plants to expell the blitters Been to gym attended one appointment another this afternoon with doctor for my annual medication check No quilting today I want to get it finished as looking through my wardrobe I think I need a colourful merino cardi for the cold weather The feline continues to celebrate the absence of a k9 by taking over all the lookout spots to watch the street activity and the best sun spots. Enjoy your day RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 23-04-2025 I am enjoying the pink jacket, which turned out to be more magenta than fuchsia, but brightens up the cooler days no end - so I recommend a bit of colour in the chill. It works where black just makes things worse somedays. Though, looking down at my magenta and black tartan leggings they do go rather well together! Library done, groceries done, script repeats to hand, and sweetcorn fritters for lunch from my favourite cafe, I can hibernate if those black clouds overhead let loose as the met site suggests they might... RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 23-04-2025 Slowly getting there. Yep Ill just be doing the kitchen, laundry and bathroom. Over the next few days. the rest will wait. Having Half then pantry space for my Tupperware is the hardest part. But Ill get there. And God knows where my book of words is, but ill be phoning the power shortly. Then Ill empty the car.. And Fill the fryer. Dianne brought me some snapper yesterday. She said I could RE freeze it if I wanted... noooo way I will do that.. So Snapper and chips tonight. RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 23-04-2025 Ohh it was beautiful. Of course I dont know where the tongs are.. And why they aren't with everything else. But I coped. Have a lot of the kitchen done.. And the car is empty again.. I was looking for the box with the fryer and Crockpot in , cos I knew it also had the cutlery in. Looked everywhere... Yep it was sitting next to the stove. Madam has stopped me now. to the point she is laying on my dress between my shins, so I cant move.. She is a bossy britches but she knows when I need a rest too RE: You can never have enough... - zqwerty - 23-04-2025 What Air Fryer do you have poppeye333?, I'm going to have to get a new one as the old one is only running the fan slowly and that's only after it warms up. I have seen the little tower ones with a door on the front but they seem to need so much cleaning from the fat that gathers on the tray on the lowest level. RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 23-04-2025 I have a deep fryer, I dont like oven fries. but I also have the glass bowl air cookers.. BUT I also have a new Brabantia air fryer.. Still new in the box. I blame Jamie Oliver for me getting one lol.. Wait for Briscoes to have a sale thats the best time to get them RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 24-04-2025 morning ladies ![]() ![]() It will take a while to settle in and find things, popeye. But you'll get there. The lawnmowing people come today, the grass has spring-like growth thanks to the warm weather and the cyclone. Better check the lawn for more mushrooms before it is mowed too. And move the bins and trolley. And then I'll get back to weeding. Need to get it done before the frosts arrive and the ground becomes too cold. The Furry One seems a bit off colour, refusing food and lethargic. We'll keep an eye on him today, but it may mean a vet visit at some stage. Yesterday I looked down at the ground and there was my sister-in-law's dog's name tag ![]() I can just imagine your cat enjoying all those doggy spots, mica lol. The new dog will have to sort that out. Although if your cat was like ours when the dogs arrived, she will show him who is boss. Happy crafting ![]() RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 24-04-2025 Morning everyone Rather chilly this morning... The high ceilings might have something to do with that too. Plus Im having a cold breakfast. Ill make more rice later. Off to Pukekohe this morning to do some shopping. I haven't done much for the last month cos I didn't want to move it. so Ill build the Cat food up and more peaches etc for my breakfast. A new dog will certainly have to Learn its place when you get one Mica. I remember when we had two Foxies. Millie arrived.. A wee little grey Madam who got past both of them and was under the house. The dogs barking at her alerted us to her. We got her out and I said she got passed both she can stay. She was covered in fleas.. But Ohh she used to chase those poor dogs every day. She put them in place right away. The only time I saw her worried about anything , she had run halfway across the road chasing another cat, I saw her through the window. She stopped, looked back and it was like Ohh Shit Im on the road and she turned around and came back lol. Hope I can find a cardy today lol... I had a fan on in the kitchen yesterday lol.. It only gets late sun,, YAY I hate a hot kitchen.. Have a fab day all RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 24-04-2025 There is something about early morning sun on a calm day, it is kind of golden in the way some evening sunlight turns faintly green... But I'm not getting up yet, there is a chill in the air and I have a hot cuppa and my tablet and the morning is still and quiet. RE: You can never have enough... - Mica - 24-04-2025 Morning all Sunny but chilly Put duvet on bed last night beginning of winter All good with my annual medication check got snaffooed by pathlab strike when I went to get bloods done will have to go next week. My morning at the warehouse will need an extra layer to keep warm Grocery shopping this afternoon Enjoy the day |
