One of my butterflies as broken out of its chrysalis, a boy, wings pumped up nicely and it looks healthy, so that is a special pleasure. And the builders have carted down the old rimu pelmet from the refurbed flat for me, after I mentioned I could use it for garden edging. They're a nice bunch this time round, no portaloo and very considerate of us lot with their noisy tools. Now I just need the seedling grass to get a bit stronger so I can put the edging in on one side, it'll replace a rather warped board I put there seven years ago and stop my spent potting mix donations cascading downhill.

Scavenging pays around there, lol!

And Jan? About the budget, are the Nats trying to grow the prison industry or what? More beds and ppp developments of new prisons? That works soooo well overseas... (???)

When times are tough, crime goes up. And rather than look at other means, they build prisons...

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 23-05-2025

I like means testing. Mine was tested to get this flat. One thing though, I didn't lie or cheat or hide assets. Unlike some of my neighbours.

I'd like to see super means tested.

RE: You can never have enough... - Praktica - 23-05-2025

Saying that means testing will catch only the well off is all very well, but ignores the difficulties which the Ministry of Social Deveoplment put in the way of almost all beneficiaries (except pensioners). There will be many families whose young people are entitled to a benefit, but who are unable to claim it...quite deliberately, as a way for the government to save money.

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 23-05-2025

Including pensioners - under this government. Pensioners applying for extra help are having their savings double checked...

morning ladies Smile I think we have had another frost this morning, at least it will be warm when the sun comes out Smile

Today I will pull the last of the tomatoes out. Usually, MrK would do this but not this year. And the rhubarb needs a good cut back. It's easy peasy to freeze, wipe, slice, bag and freeze. There may even be a few apples left on the tree to add to it. But first I'll set a casserole up in the slow cooker for dinner. Love the slow cookers!

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 24-05-2025

It was warmer overnight though, with the cloud cover, but looks pretty good for another day mucking around in the garden. The grass seed has definitely germinated there is green fuzz all over that little patch so I may get away with having done that without her express approval. She's back on Thursday I think so we'll see then whether I get growled at, very territorial, my neighbour.

And I won my cheer up auction last night, after a minor bidding war that nearly doubled its nice low start price, a vintage purple wool coat will be in its way to me this week, looking forward to seeing that. And it means I can list the winter coat currently hanging in the wardrobe which is a lovely houndstooth wool, but a normal full length, and therefore too long for me, I can get out of the shorten and rehem job if I sell it on. Pity though, it is a really nice coat - but hey, it isn't PURPLE! Woo hoo...

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 24-05-2025

Good Morning everyone

Yes it was warmer late yesterday, I had a feeling it would cool down overnight. and it did.

Ohh Hunnie a beautiful wool coat will be awesome.. I dont mind Purple, but its never my first choice, unless there's no other colour I like.

Ill be back in the spare room today. I wish David had taken his stuff away, but I can work around it, to a degree. I just want the room sorted and safe so Madam can have free run of the room, but at the mo she could easily get stuck somewhere.

Me / she who does not like fake flowers has seen some beautiful Aran Lillies on Temu. Im tempted as I want something for the coffee table. BUT I also have the tea trolly table against the wall with my tall trifle bowl with stones, shell and driftwood that a school friends kids gave me back in the early 90s in. So do I actually need two centerpieces in a smallish room that also has a wall of pretties..
In saying that I could also put them in the corner of the breakfast bar to hide the electrical stuff that is there. DVS, modem and power board. I hadn't thought of that.

I also saw fake Toi toi and that would look cool in my old pottery crock that is in the hall way with the ancient iron and very rusted possibly a hoe head. But Madam might just think that is a toy for her.

Decisions decisions lol.

Have a wonderful day everyone

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 24-05-2025

I have just put two Farmers fake orchids through a bucket of soapy water - they were in the bathroom window instead of a curtain, and boy they got grotty. But they cleaned up well. I am not good with real orchids, but love them, so, at a distance these are a good alternative. And being washable is an advantage...

Indeed, in fact so many & varied are those obstacles, they might almost be seen as deliberately cruel.

Bernard Hickey in an interview with Bryan Bruce, had some very interesting comments on this latest budget, well worth a listen if anyone has the time - 10mins or so.

I'm not against it in principle - but it depends on what the conditions are - & sometimes they're deliberately made virtually impossible for most.

Perhaps if all our politicians were to get off their collective derrieres, put aside their differences, take a long term view & work together for the good of us all, we might just have a far better society eventually. We could even go so far as to look at what works well in other countries & adopt/adapt that for our country.

I don't think too many Kiwis actually want homeless people & street beggars...

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 24-05-2025

The changes they are making affect far more people than we think. For instance, the social housing subsidy is ending. That's the one that keeps my rent affordable. As a legacy tenant my rent will not be affected, but my landlords have to change policy in order to remain financially viable. So, they are changing the criteria for new tenants, by removing some of the restrictions. Competition for flats will increase, Winz will no longer be the referral body, it will be open to the general public. And rents will reflect that. So, we might get neighbours far better off than us, paying more, but homeless oldies will have fewer options. More competition. Can't blame the housing providers, they can't do it on hot air.

Imagine being in your late 70s and living in a car because you're divorced, or estranged from family, or have health issues, or whatever. It can happen to anyone, it happened to us. But we were lucky.

In a just & caring society that could never happen.

Most of us here are old enough to remember a time when no one was homeless, when no one needed to beg on the street, & while those times were far from perfect, it was broadly speaking, a more caring society.

What has been done to this country by successive govts makes me extremely angry; its hardly surprising that most of us now have little or no respect for politicians. Angry

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 24-05-2025

I made biscuits with margarine and a swipe of peanut butter instead of real butter, and they taste slightly different, but extremely yummy. I don't think I'd want that on a freshly baked scone or a hot potato, but for baking, that's a win...

RE: You can never have enough... - Lilith7 - 24-05-2025

I haven't used butter for years now, I use that olive oil spread instead & its fine for baking too, at least so far.

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 25-05-2025

morning ladies Smile We have another fine, calm day today. Love it!

That was a great speech, OHH. Ricardo was so right in saying what he did. That's another bill snuck in without proper discussion and consultation. And snuck in late in the evening when everyone is tired and the public aren't aware of it. Once again, lower income families pay the price. And why wasn't the Speaker there, can't he stay awake! Ba***** in the first degree.

Yesterday I had a big clean up around the back of the house. MrK has had fence posts and the like stacked against the house which he has never used or is ever likely to use (he admitted it lol). I moved it all out into the middle of the yard so he could see what he would like to keep and what to give away. Our neighbour then came over with the kids and took it all away Big Grin They will cut it up and it should give them a few more weeks of firewood. A win-win for us both. I also advertised a pile of old bricks we will never use on FB and they sold within minutes. $$ in the bank straight away and they will be picked up today. I was thinking some big garden pots along the side of the house could work. Just have to find plants that will live in pretty much constant shade over winter. It will have to wait until the pump has been paid for though.

It's our 40th wedding anniversary today. Boy, those 40 years have flown by. Many said we wouldn't last two lol. Somehow, I knew they were wrong.

RE: You can never have enough... - popeye333 - 25-05-2025

Morning everyone

A chilly start.

Happy Anniversary Mr and Mrs Kiwimade.. We were told the same thing.. And one of the ladies on the check out at new world I found out on Thursday there is 23 years between her and Hubby and they are still going strong 25 years later.

A lot of people dont get the whole age gap thing. Im only 6 weeks older than MrPs eldest son.

Got the spare room to where I like it for now. It will be better when Davids stuff has gone. Im thinking of getting more pantries tho..

Last night I was looking at Kmart. Not something I do very often. They have these cool skinny on width cabinets. Two drawers on the bottom then shelves. I think they will fill the wall in, in the lounge. Tape measure is still in the spare room so Ill measure that later.

Will vacuum today and that will be about it.. Hoping the boxes will go today.. maybe. otherwise Imm be flat packing them for the recycling on Thursday.

Have a fab day all

Oh the Jonquills or early cheer are flowering lol 2 flowers so far lol

RE: You can never have enough... - Oh_hunnihunni - 25-05-2025

Forty years km, I am very jealous. Still, I wouldn't give away my eight, they were the very best years, just too few. Hydrangeas do quite well in pots as you know and do well from cuttings, and thinking of my own shaded spots I love my Mexican Daisies, erigeron, despite their pest weed designation. They are so pretty, never stop, and can take any kind of neglect. They look especially good in pots.

I am considering a bit of wholesale plant napping. There is a small pink rose, very thorny, low growing, in the path bed at the refurbed flat where the builders are piling their discards. I'm thinking of relocating it, with my spade. I happen to know that it is surrounded by old fashioned cream freesias which could also come live in my garden. We'll see how my grumpy body feels later today, it might be up to a bit of stealthy daylight digging...

RE: You can never have enough... - kiwimade64 - 25-05-2025

you go girl lol. Nothing like rescuing a neglected rose. And if the freesias come with it, well that's a bonus. In saying that, roses have been known to thrive with neglect lol. If it's a carpet rose, it will take a hammering and can been pruned with hedge cutters Smile I have been known to prune them with the lawnmower Tongue

I was thinking hydrangeas would do well in pots there. And they would be bushy enough to fill the gaps and not look small and silly.

Thank you for your good wishes Smile MrK reckons we have another 10 years in us lol.
