I remember when I broke a fifteen year old contact lens, and was instantly blind. The eye test was revealing after all those years, but the updated lenses - omg, who knew trees have actual leaves, lol.

Very naughty. We should get a test every year. Specsavers are hounding me about that right now... But I just got three months worth, what if they tell me I need stronger script? Maybe next month, lol...

I lashed out on new glasses last month...about time after 5 years. I was able to get a certificate from the optometrist, making my license renewal (at 75) a bit easier.

I dont think I could use contact lenses. I cant imagine having stuff in my eyes.

Are they meant to last all that Time Hunnie? I think David wears them... what does it actually feel like having them in your eyes?

Apparently every two years, but perhaps as we age the need is more.

I cant wait till I can retire the magnifying glasses lol

They float, unless there's an issue, so you don't feel them at all. The surface of the eyeball, the white bit is just wet skin, so once you accept that a lot of the ick goes away, and contacts are less strain on the eyes, especially for someone as myopic as I am. I need coke bottle lenses in specs, contacts are much better. And I've worn them since I was 19, so 53 years, bit hard to give them up now! I still need reading glasses, unless I take the lenses out, my corrected close up vision isn't good with age related presbyopia. You can get those bifocal lenses, but I'm not brave enough to put up with the adjustment period...

These days I wear soft disposables, a pair lasts a month, but I was using hard lenses, they last for ages - fifteen years in my case, if well looked after. These are easier to look after, and I can stretch wearability to six weeks usually, which saves money.

Are they expensive? there were two people trying to put them in, their first time while I was there. 

The odd thing is My twin wore glasses from really young, but had laser surgery so doesnt wear them now. 

I didn't wear them until my third sewing factory lol.. when I was 20-21ish. 

I dont like me without them now lol.

Yes, thanks Jan. Funny thing, the young sparky who came this morning to do the thermostat in my cylinder had a big monarch tattoo across his throat, it was incredible. The detail was superb, couldn't help wincing at the thought of those needles though. I'm trying to pluck up the courage to get a tiny one on my wrist. We'll see...

And the lenses? $94 for three months, both eyes, so pricier than my hard lenses, but healthier. There are cheaper ones but I like knowing these are the perfect shape and script.

morning ladies Smile Wow, what a storm we had last night. Our power went off around 8.00pm but was back on reasonably quickly. I feel for the linesmen (and women!) who had to go out in that weather. Our neighbours and us were all texting to make sure everyone was OK Smile

That's an interesting article, Jan. I had no idea they tagged monarchs. We have seen very few recently as well. I stopped encouraging them as the praying mantises were making short work of them. I wonder if the mantises are part of the problem. That tattoo sounds amazing, OHH. I bet he has people commenting on it all the time.

Housework (blahhh) today for me and the Furry One has his vet visit later. We found a lump on his tummy last evening so it's good timing.

I see the trade court in the States has stopped the orange clown's tariffs for now. Anything to slow that idiot down.

Time to do the garden 'rounds'. Thank goodness our dodgy trees have gone.

Most of my survivor monarchs are late season hatchings, when the wasp and mantis numbers are down. But I still spread the swan plant seed everywhere on the basis that the more plants I have the more chances a few will feed caterpillars, and the butterflies seem to appreciate it, we get plenty of visits from wannabe mamas. That alone makes it worth the effort for me, and I enjoy checking the different plants for nibbled leaves. We certainly had lots more before the South African mantises took over from our little natives, and I still squish those on sight despite their usefulness in keeping other pests down.

Lovely cool calm morning here, no stormy weather in sight, though we did get rain last night, just a few little garden things to do today, so I am hoping for a lovely sunny afternoon.

Morning all 
Overcast not a breath of wind

I heard an interview on RNZ about the Monarchs and how they are tagging them  fascinating. 

Off to Palmerston North to meet up with sewingvmachine repair guy to drop off my overlocker a bit of a hike but at least I don't have to go over the saddle road to Dannevirke. He does great work and I trust him whereas the local person is ok not so when his apprentice tinkles. Nothing major but usually another trip back. So lunch in PN today and another trip  to collect 

I was short sighted and  wore contact lens 30 plus years before I had my cataracts  done don't need any correction now had accommodating replacement lens implants  way back 2008.
I used my script and bought contacts on line OHH that was significantly  cheaper than buying them from optometrist.

Morning everyone

Its calm and dry here at present, well it was while I was in the kitchen lol.

I asked the guy yesterday if my Pupil distance would have changed with the weight loss and he said yes, Cos Im getting progressives they measure the frames to get the change in the right place. Amazing the things that change when you lose heaps of weight.

Not sure what I will get up to today.. The pull to go to the oppies is big. But I will only buy stuff I didn't know I needed. I have stopped looking at the clothes tho. Simply cannot squish anything more into the wardrobes lol.

I do need to go get the butter money, but Ill see what happens. David doesn't like it when you try and pay for things, BUT I can sneak the money into the cooker box lol.

It was only at the last house that I discovered that the praying Mantis ate monarchs, so they also joined my hit list. Dianne has heaps of swan plants. I must get her to bring me in some seed pods. We are having a day together next week, before her surgery.

I get mine online, they come from Oz, ten days from ordering. I used to get them from a TM seller but these are actually cheaper, and certainly cheaper than from the local optometrist, sadly, because I like supporting local...

Everything these days is expensive!

Friday funny this week has Joyce Grenfell sketches for anyone who remembers her, including Don't do that George.

Sunny here so did loads of washing then went out intending to do more weeding. Lasted an entire two minutes - the wind is freezing!

Morning everyone

A bleak day out.

Spent another few hours in the spare room.. Found my cats and pigs Yay.. Was the second from the floor crate in the corner.
Still looking got the kettle... I swear Ill end up buying a new one before I find it.

Also found the blankets for the bed. And the patchwork looking but not quilt for the spare bed.

Decided to go and buy a new electric blanket this morning. I know it will help both our bones. So will compare prices online to save the walking.

Also found my Stepfathers, Mothers Massive cut glass I assume, Vase. It is sitting nicely in the corner of the breakfast bar. It looks at home.

morning ladies Smile it's lovely and calm this morning. Even those blo**y rabbits were out on the lawn.

There are a couple more things to do in the garden and then it is done for winter. One plant needs dividing, and another moved as it will grow too big or where it is now. And one of the cyclamens needs to be potted up as it is struggling where it is. There is something soothing about playing in the dirt Smile

Yesterday I finished the outer edge of the hardanger and omg, it actually joined up without any fiddling around lol. It was absolutely spot on Big Grin It just made my day lol.

I must put the smoke alarm back up; it wouldn't stop when the power surge went through the house. The surge protector was smoking so I guess they work!

I had a dm from friends in Boston, they are coming to Auckland next March and their ship will be here for three full days, so I am researching Must See things for them. Our friendship goes back to 9/11, when Shell and I were regulars on a garden forum. She was living in New York, very pregnant, and from her desk she watched the Twin Towers tragedy go down as I watched it on our tv from my Blenheim living room. Because of her immediacy in telling us of her terror she shared the experience on a level few of us internationals could ever feel, it made us all friends for life. When I went to the US to meet up with some of those gardening axe murderers, lol, she was raising her family and wasn't free to join the dozen or so who met in Pennsylvania, so this will be our first real life meeting, so it is bound to be a very special time, particularly now as her husband, who I have also grown to know online over the years (our politics are very similar!) has a nasty cancer diagnosis and this will be his last world cruise trip I suspect. It is a bit of a challenge coming up with ideas for such a momentous visit, this meeting of beloved strangers, very exciting...

Good morning.

Sunshine ... will be able to get outside at last.  DH already out waterblasting our side of the driveway fence ready for a long overdue paint ... neighbour did theirs last weekend.

What an exciting visit to look forward to OHH. It will indeed take some thought to narrow down the best attractions to visit in a short time!

We still see monarch butterflies flying by or on flowers here.  I wonder if there is an overwinter site somewhere in the Bay. The danger for them here are paper wasps  ... I never knew the praying mantis was a threat.

Vest and matching beanie knitted and sewn up,  now half way through some doll dungarees ... will do a jersey or cardi to go with them ... maybe a pinafore, dress or skirt.

Had better move.

Successful drop off of my overlocker  yesterday. DH had fun trying on  jeans and trousers in a shop that we actually got great service we wouldn't have found the 2pr he bought if the owner didn't bring pants to try on. Told him why we were visiting and turns out he was looking for local  sewing machine service person for his industrial overlocker so passed on the contact details. 

Done my housework not happy with our vacuum so will need to investigate a replacement  not even a year old so will look at consumer later. Need to book accommodation  in Taranaki  going in couple weeks to check out some k9s.

That's lovely Hunni, hope the visit goes well & they get to see at least a bit of the country.

Lovely & sunny here, Madame le Dog & I did our longer weekend walk in 20 mins this morning for reasons best known to herself, she set a fairly stiff pace. Hoping to do more weeding later if not too cold - the wind is not warm.
