Windows 10 updating problem - Praktica - 12-01-2023

In settings: windows update, my status shows up to date, last check 14/12/22. Pressing the check for updates  button does nothing. I tried running the Windows update troubleshooter, and it gets as far as "checking for requested reset", and nothing happens, apart from the green progress bar running. It will sit like that for many minutes.

The computer is a 3 year old desktop, core i5 Intel, 8mb ram. The hard drive has 80% storage available.

Any ideas or hints?

Edited to add - I run Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender. Neither report any problems.

I would leave that troubleshooter running as long as it needs and see what happens - up to a couple of hours...

Also make sure you restart from the start menu a couple of times...

and it wouldn't hurt to hold fire for a week or two to see if it resolves itself, since it is unlikely there is much in the way of updates in that short period of time...

But, my goto to definitively sort out windows update issues is Tweaking.coms windows repair AIO
https://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html
(I usually use the portable version)

It looks a bit daunting but it does have a preset specifically for Windows updates.  Never failed me that I can recall...

HTH

Thank you for your help! One restart was all it took - it is now downloading the latest updates.

RE: Windows 10 updating problem - Oldfellah - 12-01-2023

Talking about updates I stopped my desktop from updating a while back because once updated all my desktop icons turned into black squares, so I thought I would leave updating for a while to see if their was a fix by Microsoft in a future update, but sadly no, turned updates back on again and updated the lot which took a while and same thing happened after the updates just black squares for icons so used a backup I had made to reinstall an earlier version and turned updates off again .... grrrrr

That sounds like the icon cache is corrupted ...

I'd have a look at this.   I haven't used it but sounds like what is needed in your case

Very strange I went through the whole update scenario again this morning and all is well (at this stage) no black squares or anything, but bookmarked those links you posted just incase.
