Where have all the PF1ers gone. - Bryan - 23-03-2023
This used to be a very well populated site but since the previous owners axed us the replacement site has dropped way off.
Have previous members just given it away, gone to other sites or are just waiting in the wings to respond to conversations that don't seem to come?

I've been using Reddit as my primary distraction... More than a month since I last came here. Yes, lack of activity here is the problem.
And I suppose also somewhat distracted with a bunch of stuff to do after cyclone Gabby... trees down, fence broken, leaky window seals.

Theres a few reasons, Even the old site which had been around since god knows when was reducing in active members posting.
One of the biggest problems with a LOT of Forums is there are Way to many subjects. Meaning, if you look at the original PF1, there were two sections 1. Help 2. Chat. Most other forums these days have so many different options and sections that people just don't bother.
While that may be OK if a person likes browsing other subjects it defiantly reduces the community feeling.
Theres another trend as well, looking back over many many posts ( even from PF1), there has been a steady decline in actual people wanting computer help. With the introduction of Windows 10 there was a huge drop is Operating System problems. Only have to look at XP and W7, plenty of questions, plenty of problems. This also proven by the amount of businesses who have less and less actual windows problems and a reduction in work, I can safely say at least 99% of my work these days is NON windows problems, these days its more other software or hardware related.
Add in the reduction in people visiting the old forum, many wont have known where everyone has gone to, all that they will have seen is the Old forum was closing down, and next minute - Gone. Many other forums look to have a decline of active members as well. And of course it doesn't help that if you do a search for forums, this one ( and others) dont show up in the search results.
This I feel goes back to what I mentioned before, WAY to many sections.

I guess the important question is - who is missing? Is there anyone you know of that used to participate at PF1 regularly who is not here - maybe we create a list of those people? and then how would we reach them?

There are very many missing but a lot of them had left before the transfer to this site.
Speedy Gonzales is a notable one.
I have found that the best way to navigate this new site is to click on the link at the top of most pages:

This site seems to have a number of very erudite and clever older female posters who have a lot to say and very definite ideas to put forward with some entrenched members holding on to controversial views being contested just like it was on PressF1 Chat at times.
I'm enjoying being on this site, purely Engineering talk can get quite boring, I have found technical types to be quite limited in their view of the world with quite recognizable aspergers and autistic components readily on show. The older ladies on this site have a much broader view and are very well informed.

But mostly these days...Reddit.
I got banned off Geekzone a long time ago.
And most of the other NZ forums, meh, one even wanted payment to join.
So...NZReddit, I also hang out on Reddit: SFF books, Cats, Gardening: general and NZ.
No idea where others went, there was talk of another back on Pressf1, can't remember it, it wasn't that great anyway.

look in sort of weekly due to fewer posts, explained partly by Wainiu.

There is an unofficial reference copy of the old PC World forums I set up, with thanks to some clever jiggery pokery by yousnoozeyoulose in creating a database backup of the PCWorld forum data.

It is very basic, but there is a search function if you want to go back through it. It is functional, but it is running on a very average server so don't expect lightning speeds.
