Thousands have been told to leave after a volcano erupted several times.

Quote:"Indonesian authorities have issued a tsunami alert after eruptions at Mount Ruang mountain sent ash thousands of metres high. Officials ordered more than 11,000 people to leave the area.
The volcano on the northern side of Sulawesi island had at least five large eruptions in the past 24 hours, Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation said. Authorities raised their volcano alert to its highest level.
At least 800 residents left the area earlier on Wednesday (local time).

Authorities urged tourists and others to stay at least 6km from the 725m Ruang volcano.
Officials worry that part of the volcano could collapse into the sea and cause a tsunami as in a 1871 eruption there."

Hundreds of people have been evacuated as the volcano erupts for a second day. So destructive but looks so beautiful.

Scary stuff really, the potential for a volcano to erupt at any time, all around the Pacific.

Most inhabitants are either ignorant or oblivious to the risks presented by what is literally right under their feet. The Auckland Volcanic Field is very much a case in point.

Quite glad we don't live in Auckland..

A few years after the quakes here, someone made a short series about a volcano erupting in or very close to Auckland.

Somehow, despite an erupting volcano, the power remained on...

When that  aired, it's possible that Auckland heard the entire city of ChCh laughing. Rolleyes Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

What makes Auckland unique is its not like a regular volcano that erupts every now and again, but a field where a new volcano can erupt at any location randomly, in other words they are not vents like Mt Ruapehu for example.
Once the volcano has done its thing, it basically goes dead. Lets hope its many years away until the next eruption, but unfortunately its unavoidable.

That would probably be safer than adjacent to a major fault line as it is currently.

Considering that the national Civil Defence bunker is located in the Beehive's basement that's not such a positive thing.

Well there is no escaping natural disasters in this country!
Ironically parliament used to be based in Auckland once upon a time, perhaps it should have remained there?
