Mutually assured destruction is the key when it comes to nukes.
However even if a nuclear power gets attacked, i doubt they would retaliate with nukes, its pretty much a last resort, look at all the threats Putin has made and Ukraine have occupied their territory and no nukes to be seen.
Even a crazy dictator like Putin knows its the end of their nation if he plays the nuke card.
I dont really have any issue if Ukraine were to produce a nuke as a deterrent, might be enough reason for the west to take the situation more seriously and take more action rather than drip feeding them weapons, whether or not its enough of a deterrent to scare Putin out of Ukraine remains to be seen.

It might work that way but I'm not sure Putin would want to lose face by ending the invasion, especially so very publicly.

The only real way I see it ending if the sanctions have enough effect and the Oligarchs end up turning against Putin.
