Puline Hansen appeals racist decision - Lilith7 - 28-11-2024

She's appealing a court decision that she was a racist.

She told a Greens senator to "pack her bags & go back to Pakistan" but having found to have been racist she now claims to be 'concerned about free speech' - a thorny area but nonetheless, she was legally found to have been racisr.

I'm sure we all know exactly who Pauline Hansen is don't we, she's an Aussie stereotype.

(he founder and leader of One Nation, a right-wing populist political party)

Free speech does not mean permission to spout vile and hurtful comments at people. That is a verbal assault, and just as wrong as a physical one.

Is it just as wrong though? Is what Hanson did really as bad as if she had punched Faruqi in the face?

Also, having actually read the tweet, and the judge's comments, I'm not at all surprised she's appealing. Her tweet simply said (albeit in an unpleasant and deliberately rude way): don't stay in Australia if you don't like it. If someone moves to a different country from Pakistan, and then complains repeatedly about the country they've moved to, it isn't "racist" to suggest they should perhaps go back to Pakistan.

As for the judge, he's said the tweet is "anti-Muslim or Islamaphobic" despite the tweet making absolutely zero mention of Faruqi's religion, which makes his decision seem far more ideologically driven than rational.

To be clear, Hansen seems to go out of her way to be odious and antagonistic, so it is hard to feel sorry for her, however her being convicted of "racism" over this tweet is just plain wrong.

perhaps the phrase "Don't let the door hit you on the way out" would have been more appropriate here.

"Go back to [insert country of choice]" is a phrase loaded with negative connotation

Her intend was to insult, to wound, to make someopne else feel inferior. She is very clearly a racist.

That she so often makes similar comments makes me wonder if perhaps she's somehow lacking in sensitivity & empathy.

agreed, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences

Everything she says is suspect because it is certain she is racist and odious as well.
