Asus Vivobook Problems - driftwood - 02-12-2024
Having two problems with this laptop.
It's been losing the wifi intermittently and not resuming from sleep.
When the wifi goes out, it doesn't show on the device manager.
A reboot sometimes fixes this, or it may just come back on it's own.
This system started out on Windows 10 and then updated to 11.
I read on a forum, this problem could be caused by the latest windows 11 drivers not be totally compatible with the system.
So, I reverted it back to Windows 10 and the default drivers.
All was good for about a week, then both faults started to return.
Any Ideas or solutions would be appreciated.

if the wifi card is disappearing from device manager then I might be inclined to think that is a hardware fault, I had to replace the wifi card in my laptop a while back for the same reason, although mine was still present in device manager when it failed.
Mine was an Atheros wifi card which seemed to have a few issues from what i read, so i replaced it with an intel one, seems to have resolved my problem...

Those Atheros chips are nothing but trouble and have countless compatibility issues due to their age and lack of support, there is some unofficial drivers out there.
if yours is an Atheros adapter then try finding a better driver here https://www.ath-drivers.eu/
If that fails i suggest you disable the adapter and install a small USB one, or if your system contains an internal adapter thats easily accessible beneath the cover, you can probably find an Intel or other similar adapter.

The wifi is showing in the device manager as Intel Dual Band Wireless AC-8265
The driver is still the one I installed from Asus.
There is still the other issue of the system intermittently not waking from sleep.
It requires a hard reboot to revive.

you can check the existing driver date/version before installing and compare
is it sleep or hibernate - sleep would happen after the sleep time setting in settings/system/power - change it to a lower value to test....
I usually end up disabling hibernate, seems kinda pointless to me these days and has been known to be problematic. You can check the event viewer for errors, power issues are usually written to the event log
you can disable hibernate with admin terminal/ powershell
powercfg -h off

I updated the wifi to the Intel driver.
It worked fine for a while, now no go at all.

the next logical step is to try another wifi adapter - as nzoomed suggested the small usb ones are nice and easy to install, even if temporary for testing. process of elimination...
