Looking at setting up port forwarding for remote access to my home security NVR.
What are the pros and cons?

Most NVRs have pretty bad security back doors. I'd seriously advise against it.
Investigate using something like tailscale (free for 50 devices) which makes a sort of VPN without requiring any port forwarding.
Or if you must port forward, put in a vpn and access your HVR that way.

i'd certainly investigate whether the NVR supports p2p or cloud access first

3 years here using Dahua NVR & cameras with their P2P app DMSS. All the parts bought from Aliexpress, adding (7) cameras as I went along. DMSS makes it easy and it's reliable and fairly well polished.
What is your system?

I am using Hikvision. Can only access from my PC (home network).
Of course, can use the android App from my phone, too.

the software to use should be this

Manual is on the same webpage - you would need to be using the hik-connect service to do this - see section 3.2.4 Add Device by Hik-Connect, rather than via IP address etc
Presumably you already have the NVR registered with hik connect since you have it on your phone working...
