On the subject of movies... I watched The Substance last night. Well, most of it. It left me wondering why on Earth human beings make stuff like this? Do we like being revolted by our own ghastliness? Oh, and how brave is Demi Moore to be naked for the camera. I couldn't do that.
Still an icky movie though. Not recommended. Except as a test of our own perseverence as audience.

I always liked him too; apparently one of their dogs was also dead but two were left alive - probably they were younger dogs.

They liked dogs, had three German Shepards. The dead one was found in a cupboard close to the dead wife. The other two were found running around outside. Front door was open. Very suspicious, she was found in bathroom surrounded by scattered pills, Gene was found in the kitchen, both of them had been dead for a while (both had mummified hands). Found by one or both of the two groundsmen who only worked once every three weeks or so.
If it was a mutual suicide and they didn't want to leave the dogs for someone else to look after then why only one?
My money is on one or both of the groundsmen. Having done the deed, they waited for two/three weeks then they realized that no one had found them so they "found" them when going to work as usual, if they hadn't reported then they would look really guilty.
She was the person who dealt with them so they would know where she kept the cash to pay them. At first sight nothing moved or taken.

My money is on a murder suicide, the wife did it, then overcome with guilt took her own life...
Either that or a gas leak or similar...

Gas leak. Even suiciding people don't want to kill their dogs. Usually. But a gas leak takes you by surprise, and carbon monoxide might give you a headache, hence the pills.
We detectives need more information...

The dog type was wrongly identified and found locked up in a cage in a cupboard.
This dog was her special favourite.

Padilla told USA Today that the couple’s German shepherd, Bear, is alive and is in his care, along with another dog, Nikita, a 7-year-old Akita-shepherd mix.
Padilla said that the dog who died was Zinna, a 12-year-old reddish Australian Kelpie mix, who had once trained in agility skills to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. He said that Zinna was found in her crate with the door closed."

The other two are in kennels, it's in the link I posted.
My point is if it was suicide she wouldn't have locked her favourite dog in a locked crate kennel cage in a cupboard if she was going to commit suicide except she may have been so upset finding Gene's body that she wasn't thinking straight.
Far more likely the garden workers found his body and maybe hers and locked the inside dog away before pilfering the stash of money used to pay them normally if they hadn't both been dead.

Betsy Arakawa died a week before Gene Hackman, of a rare virus spread by mice, Gene Hackman was in an advanced stage of Alzheiners & died of heart disease.

I suspect a few wrong assumptions have been made here. Though Hackman had heart disease this isn't necessarily the primary cause of death, just a contributing factor. With his advanced state of Alzheimer's it is likely that his wife was his primary carer and after she died the condition would have meant he probably would have been deprived of food and water as unable to source these by himself but as he was found in the kitchen it is possible he was trying to. He also wouldn't have been taking any prescribed medications after his wife died. Dehydration in particular wouldn't be a great condition for someone with heart issues and just that may have been the determining factor in his death.

Quite a sad state of affairs it seems, im guessing they were living quite a reclusive life or else someone would have sounded the alarm if they were in regular contact with friends/family?
