Failed hard drives NAS is it me or the hard drives? - mickg - 26-03-2025
I have been trying NAS lately. I bought a 2nd-hand Synology DS 115j and had a 1TB and 2TB fail, and then the 115j packed a sad.
So I have bought a Qnap TS-133, which is a lot harder for me to work out compared to the Synology, I have just had a new Iron wolf 4tb packed up now trying to set up Qnap Is it me or a coincidence ?
I'm 83, and I just want something simple to store my music and video files. But I have to admit the Qnap is a pain to set up and work with.

for a NAS I just use an old PC with a few drives in it so can't really help on that front, apart from maybe suggesting youtube; must be a few good videos on there you could follow.
As for drives dying, that unfortunately is the way of storage drive things, and why I usually by the ones with 5 year warranties, and why backups are a must for any data you're not prepared to lose.
I have had a couple of DOA including a 20TB I bought off amazon a year or so ago (another $80 to send it back)... still cheaper than buying in NZ though.

Those synology NAS units are pretty good, typically you should have 2 drives installed as a RAID 1 mirror, if one drive fails, it should give a notification and you simply swap the drive over with a new one.
Its normal and common for drives to fail, hence the reason for redundancy.
