Your view of the situation needs to be mindful of the actual degree of control Trump has on it, and in New Zealand's (and other small nations') standing on the world stage. At times, diplomacy sails awful close to complicity. We should have learnt from the 30s, that appeasement of despots is not a good idea, for anyone.
