We fished alongside Bob Jones. Had a few conversations back in our Taupo days. He was exceedingly well read, deeply opinionated, and very very clever. He was also one of the most arrogant people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and very quick with a witty response. He left Winston for dead on that score. In business he was dangerously competitive, and for him everything about life was business.
Which is how people become a billionaire when inheritance is not a starting point. But I don't think he was ever content, except when he was in his library, or on the water. But really, that's a pretty good life compared to many. RIP.

There is a lot of hate and vitriol in that link you posted...
and someone throwing copious amounts of money around in itself has no bearing on the personality traits of the said individual. One would have to understand the motivations for their gifting to know who/what they really are...

In this case "nasty piece of work" is more apt. Jones was a deeply unpleasant person. I have heard many stories of his truly horrible machinations (sometimes described sycophantically as "pranks") inflicted on lawyers and legal staff for no reason other than to humiliate them and waste their time. His sporadic charitable donations do nothing to balance out his sadism.
