Mark Mitchell wants an end to shorter sentences - Lilith7 - 05-05-2025 Fantastic - now, even more people will become hardened criminals, bitter, twisted & keen to give a massive special salute to society.. WHY? Why the devil do right wing politicians appear unable to see past the bash bash short term 'solution' fgs? Mark Mitchell seems unable to comprehend that other ways can & do, get far better long term results. He gives the impression of being a mercikess bully. ![]() Or is it that they DO for reasons unknown actually want a large group of people constantly committing crimes, returning to prison again & again...?! How the devil can they be so very stupid. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/559975/mark-mitchell-wants-short-prison-sentences-scrapped-in-hope-of-reducing-reoffending They're very keen to lock people up, not so keen on having to deal with the consequences of that... https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/on-the-inside/556381/new-sentencing-laws-will-drive-nz-s-already-high-imprisonment-rates RE: Mark Mitchell wants an end to shorter sentences - heisenberg - 05-05-2025 (05-05-2025, 03:49 PM)Lilith7 Wrote: Fantastic - now, even more people will become hardened criminals, bitter, twisted & keen to give a massive special salute to society.. whats your solution RE: Mark Mitchell wants an end to shorter sentences - dken31 - 05-05-2025 Did you read the bit about people with longer sentences having more access to rehabilitation and having more successful re-entry into society? The data shows that people who serve longer sentences are less likely to re-offend, so your insinuation that longer sentences turn people into hardened criminals that are more likely to re-offend isn't actually supported by the facts. They could do worse than to look at what other countries are doing. While no system is perfect, some countries are managing to do better than others. Norway has one of the world's lowest recidivism rates, only 20% of formerly incarcerated committ another crime within two years of release. And there are fewer people going to prison. Prior to the reforms in the 19190's their recidivist rate was in the 60% to 70%, they're clearly doing somthing right... https://www.firststepalliance.org/post/norway-prison-system-lessons#:~:text=The%20most%20profound%20benefit:%20Norway,in%20the%20low%20recidivism%20rate.
