Unemployed people to be used in flood clean up - Lilith7 - 09-07-2025

On one hand, it makes some sense to get those who haven't a job to help clean up the mess, but on the other hand it does have a faint whiff of 'the poor must be made to work'.

And you have to hope they'll check that anyone involved is in good health & able to help.

If they are shipped in from outside the area, they'll be given accommodation? They'll be paid at least the minimum wage for their work?

well obviously they're not going to be unemployed if they are working for the government, so they should get a fair wage.

I assume it's voluntary?

You'd have to hope so - surely, even this govt wouldn't expect people to not be paid.

It used to be a requirement in the past and should still be so. I think the benefit equates to about 15 hours a week so that should be minimum. After that some negotiation might be in order but the benefits of physical fitness, being out with people where opportunities can arise and general well-being far outweigh any negatives. These are job-seekers who should be grasping at any chance to get ahead.
