I wonder who got that silver Interprovincial exhibition medal it does not seem to have reappeared since then?

The Noble listing does say the silver is unpublished.  The image in the Morel catalogue could be any kind of bronze finish, unfortunately - I wonder if bright vs. non-bright was even a consideration almost 30 years ago.  They'll all be in the next edition, anyway.

a little vinegar and salt will brighten them up, so I've heard.

I am wondering how much interest there could be in the WJ Noble Collection of New Zealand Historical Medals and Memorabilia auction (part 1). Could be a record number of unsold lots? I suspect the well known items such as 1865 NZ exhibition medals will go for a fair amount. Certainly no bargains to be had there. But there are a great many other very obscure items. Can there really be sufficient interest for them to all sell at the one auction?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 10-09-2023

I reckon the WJ Noble Collection of New Zealand Historical Medals and Memorabilia auction should really have taken place in NZ where the majority of interested buyers reside? I would have travelled within NZ to be present to bid in person and collect my items, but am not comfortable to spend a large amount and then hope my purchases arrives safely in the post. They probably would get here but if something did go amiss it could be a real hassle.

Yes, woulid have made sense from our perspective to do that - though I wonder how many historical medal collectors we have here.  Would there be enough interested buyers to make it worthwhile when they have their established routines in place at their Australian venues?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 11-09-2023

yes probably not realistic but would have been nice to have it here.

meanwhile some good research in this wikipedia article about New Zealand Interprovincial Exhibition, mentions (with newspaper of the time reference!) the awarding of a few silver medals.

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 11-09-2023

the noble NZ medals is really motoring along, probably owing to the fact that many lots are not getting any bids!

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 11-09-2023

The 1865 exhibition medal in bright bronze didn't go for as much as I thought it should. I'm wondering if it might have been a little bit dodgy?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 12-09-2023

Bugger! the 1940 centennial medal with the billowing clouds didn't sell. I wish I'd bid on it now!

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 21-09-2023

seems to be already a lot of bidding at the mowbray auction. Foreigners?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 22-09-2023

oh for crying out loud the Ceylon 1957 double proof set I had my eye on is now more than twice the estimate!

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 22-09-2023

according to my Bertrand a 1943 florin in uncirculated condition is worth $350, at present one is going for $400 at the mowbray auction. What's up with that?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 22-09-2023

have mowbray always been listed on numisbids website?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 22-09-2023

If I'd known I was going to get an ass whipping at the Mowbray auction I'd have splashed out more at the Noble medals auction where lots of bargains went unclaimed. really p!ssed off now!!

some Canadian billionaire coin collector must have purchased this?!
