Here is another one:- Listing # 4427943738 Medallist: P.H.M. (Philipp Heinrich Müller) 1650 Augsburg - 1716 War of the Spanish Succession, Silver Medal 1702. " re-edited by Sparkasse Landau 1980," What does re-edited stand for?

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 24-11-2023

some rich prick paid a lot for it!

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - alpha111 - 25-11-2023

Wish I had that much money to waste! But here is another good one on Trade Me; an Auction Kings $1 bargain that went for $103.49 including shipping.
Ancient Silver Coloured Greek or Spanish Coin? Listing #4421925395.
This is the 'spanish coin AD 1130' from the 16 coin crap set of "Authentic Replicas of ANCIENT COINS" that I used to give away to people years ago. (Still got two sets left). It's not even worth $1.

this the set?

"You cannot place a bid as you already have bids placed on too many items."

thanks a lot trade me!

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - alpha111 - 25-11-2023

That is the replica set. Never struck that bid limit you mention on Trade Me but did get told off on BidBud for monitoring too many closing prices.
Could you get around this by placing a few bids on BidBud as well? Can't see how Trade Me could monitor that, at least try it.

Perhaps initially Morel had thought there existed a 41mm medal and when the 51mm come along it created some confusion?

Weird - everything about this is just odd.  How do they know "unofficial" dies were used, and why would anyone pay over the odds if it's just an unofficial restrike or ... fake?

That's the one.  I even had an enquiry once from a museum up Hastings way about that piece from the HK replicas board.  At least they asked, I guess.  I added the WINS page link to the FAQ of one of the coin groups on Facebook some time ago to save writing detailed replies every time one of these "treasures" is discovered.

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 01-12-2023

has anyone tried this on their coins?

https://kbs-coatings.co.nz/products/aquaklean?variant=30215690027061

it's got basically the same ingredients as the famous MS70 coin brightener.
(obviously make sure to wash off any traces of the product from your coin after use).

Why? (As in why use it, not why remove the residues)

RE: TM Coin Club Thread - Dean - 02-12-2023

That is an interesting question you pose there Martin. My answer is that in most cases you shouldn't use it. However I don't believe it does any actual damage to a coin so if a coin has a blemish or is marked possibly by previous bad handling or cleaning then its appearance can be improved. I believe similar products are probably used for conservation purposes by NGC and PCGS. Also when you purchase a coin you have no idea what it might have been subjected to by previous owners. I once bought a 1953 NZ proof set off ebay, contained in one of those special capital plastic type holders. They were really nice and I broke them out and put them in Saflip coin holders. I left them for a while and next time I checked on them the coppers had developed carbon spots as well as the threepence. I suspect the person who put them in the holder originally might have blown/spat on them or something to remove any bits of fluff or debris. I was able to remove the carbon spot from the threepence but no such luck with the coppers (probably should have used acetone on them after breaking them out.)

Update on tradme bidding rules. Apparently, so they tell me, there is a bid limit of 100 bids per 24hr period. It is reset after that period. I told them it was a stupid rule but apparently they are not able to change this. Perhaps this rule was was put in place very early on after trademe had just started and it is too complicated for them, or they don't know how, to change the rule?

they're called mowbrays now. Makes sense, don't know why they persisted so long with the alternate name.

The actual House of Stamps closed in around 1987 and sold out to John M at that time as I understand it.  I was a regular customer for a decade or more when John Lusted had his shop on the Mezzanine floor in Coastlands in Paraparaumu.

I don't know, but why are these buyers never around when I'm selling?

When people say they "can't" do something it often means they "won't" - and I've said as much on a few occasions.  Sometimes that's produced a result.

Chris (coins-online) has a cased proof for $25.95 plus $6.00 shipping. Still remember the days had a third share in a proof that sold for $300 in pre-Trade Me days.

Hope I didn't get carried away like that above and pay too much for Moscow Olympic coins Listing#4437982280 .

indeed and it is not a very well publicised rule either. A bit rude for the seller also, given the big cut trademe already takes of their profit, to be banning their best customers from bidding!

Blimey, those Russian ones slipped under the radar - well done!  I remember even the base-metal 1974 NZ Day Dollars going quite stratospheric at one time.  Bit of hoarding and market manipulation in some quarters, I suspect.
