Robert De Niro on Trump
#1
He doesn't appear to think much of the orange one. That must have taken some courage; its a quite a  risk for anyone so well known to oppose Trump, especially when he could possobly lose work because of his stand, well done De Niro. Smile
Quote:https://www.stuff.co.nz/world-news/350293881/two-bit-big-shot-robert-de-niro-unleashes-donald-trump-outside-hush-money

As closing arguments began in the former president’s historic trial, De Niro made a surprise appearance in Lower Manhattan flanked by police officers who defended the US Capitol building during the January 6 riots in 2021.

Describing Trump as a “tyrant” who New Yorkers tolerated “when he was just another grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot two-bit playboy,” De Niro, a native of Manhattan, warned voters about the dangers of a second Trump presidency.
“People thought they could control Hitler, thought they could control Mussolini, it didn’t happen,” said the Goodfellas star, as Trump supporters yelled profanities in the background.

A dictator is a dictator, and that’s what Trump wants to do and be.”

De Niro recently lent his voice to an attack ad for Democrats that paints Trump as a threat to democracy, but his cameo at the court was the first major attempt by the Biden campaign to directly lean into Trump’s legal woes.

No need to worry, just a rumour though:

You saw it here first.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

"its a quite a risk for anyone so well known to oppose Trump"...really? It is hardly a secret that Hollywood, and the entertainment industry generally, is heavily left leaning and most actors/artists dislike Trump. De Niro frothing at the mouth and screaming "Orange Man bad!" (which is really all his diatribe amounted to) is neither edgy nor brave; instead it just came off as a bit pathetic and desperate.

I think any nation that even thinks of electing someone with his morals is on the way down. Nothing to do with being left or right. Empires and civilisations seem to follow a pattern that always ages the same way - into decline in moral standards, degrading of human rights and values, and depravity. Either that or it gets swallowed up by a neighbour. History shows us plenty of examples...

If he gets convicted I will be very surprised. Pleased, but surprised...

Obviously its more comfortable for Trump sympathisers & supporters to attempt to  minimise any opposotion to or criticism of  Trump.  Rolleyes

The facts remain, nonetheless.

Yes, me too. I think the people of America deserve betther than Trump. And if the worst happens & he is elected President again then we're likely to see large numbers leaving America.

Which other slimy creatures do you support because they're "not left"?

There are quite a few to choose from - Putin, Netanyahu, Jong Un, bin Salman - not to mention the other continents despots...

Spoilt for choice really. And people wonder why so many of our young people have little faith in the future.

It's sounding increasingly likely that first Trump is going to be found guilty, and secondly that the verdict is imminent.

Likely to upstage NZ's budget performance if the verdict is released (either way) but at least Luxon & co aren't being upstaged by their coalition partners or the opposition this time around I guess.

I'm only game to listen to short excerpts of her on the radio. I'll risk a bit of video coverage on the telly news later as I'm running low on eye bleach.

Probably won't need to. He'll likely implode if held in remand until his appeal is heard. The reality of being denied the limelight and also his usual expectations of lifestyle will hit him hard.

No doubt there will be at at the very least, one appeal.

Interesting reactions.

The comment accompanying this Twitter video post (not safe for work) sums it up nicely: "Don’t ever say both sides are the same. We aren’t even the same species"
