"No reason for Kainga Ora houses in Remuera"....
The delightful govt. is planning to sell 200 houses in Remuerua, worth about $2 million each, the money allegedly to be invested in "more affordable areas"
Yeah...can't have the peasants rubbing shoulders with the alleged 'elite' can they...

And if that wasn't enough, they'll also remove over 600 roles so that they can 'renew' the organisation. Surely, even these clowns can't seriously believe Kainga Ora can possibly function better with fewer workers.
Anyone with a cynical turn of mind might think they want to privatise housing...
They tend to give the impression that they dont think poor people deserve decent housing, instead seeing housing as yet another means to make money.

I tend to agree with them on this one, doesn't make much sense having state housing in one of the more affluent suburbs. They absolutely still need to keep the existing policy of spreading them around the city to prevent the formation of slums/state housing neighbourhoods, but having them in Remuera makes no sense.
$400million would buy a lot state houses in other neighbourhoods, assuming that's what they spend the money on...

They have State Housing in those areas for a reason - for a social mix and so the rich would rub shoulders with the working man. Mind you, in the '50's and '60's, the low income household was hard working and didn't cause problems for those around them. State housing these days are unemployed, unemployable and not pleasant to their neighbours.

I do understand the the alleged reasoning behind it but it also has a strong whiff of ' lets get the peasants out of the wealthy suburbs'.
And I also find it impossible to comprehend that Kainga Ora can possibly cope even better now that so many cuts have been made to staff; it smacks of Neo Liberalism effirts to bring about privatised health.

I grew up in Remmers. Used to be a great place to live. These days though I'm in social housing in Devonport. Talking affluent suburbs...
I doubt they'll be flogging us off just yet though, unless they want to move us to one of the several brand new complexes KO has put up around here in the last few years.
I wouldn't mind, their kitchens and bathrooms aren't 40 years old, lol. And they have great views being high risers. I would miss our reserve though, and those incredble old trees. Still, beggars can't be choosers, as they say... I'm just grateful I can pay the rent.

At least we still have a roof over our heads.

For me it is the safety that this place brings me, at a time when I am reaching an unsafe age. Security. I would have to be really stupid to get tossed out of here, the rent is legislatively controlled as a proportion of income, and maintenance is taken care of. I just have to look after it and obey the rules.
And be a bit wary of my neighbours.
