I would ring my Mum in those few months when she was not living with us and hear her grieve for a friend or an old school mate or someone who was part of her life from years back, and not really understand what it felt like.

It is like standing in the shallows and watching the crystal clear wavelets come in around my feet, and feeling the grains of sand pulling away from beneath. Pleasantly unsettling...
