Looks like I've had it for using Outlook 2016 as Microsoft have changed the rules for getting emails. I've always downloaded Outlook.com emails to the PC,and not left them on the server I don't download my gmail ones.
Have got the new "Outlook for Windows" free one on the PC now so can see my emails on my PC, laptop and phone. But that doesn't allow me to download them onto my PC. But it will allow me to see my older emails on my phone like the gmail ones if I'm not downloading them to my PC.
Probably can live with that, but my Mailwasher program that first checks emails has also stopped working. I use it to delete any emails I don't want. But thinking about it I probably don't need it if I'm not downloading my emails to PC. As I can delete them on my phone.
But I do have separate folders in my Outlook program for Work,TradeMe ,etc, instead of all lumped in together.
Technology!!
I guess the answer is to upgrade my Outlook or go to 365.
Fiddling with the free Outlook I see I can create new folders to save emails into, so that's a relief. But how do I reply to older emails that are in my Outlook 2016! Copy and paste I assume!
Ongoing!!

Could just be some corruption.
Had many to repair, but not with Outlook itself. ( all third-party programs, Thunderbird, Emclient) But to repair the other programs it was a case of removing the account and re-entering it, it would then ask to authenticate again - all worked all emails came through.
KEEP IN MIND this is using IMAP, if you use a .pst file back it up 1st.
Upgrades = Old bugs replaced with new Bugs.

Got this email a few days ago.
The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.
What do you need to do?
If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.
Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

so that is to do with requiring modern authentication /oauth2 when signing in, this is the function in the setup whereby after entering user/pass and hitting the go button, you are directed to a Microsoft signin form in the browser to complete a signin of the microsoft account. Once done the email client authenticates correctly and everyone is happy.
Now I am not sure if Outlook 2016 will support this for POP (I am assuming you use POP based on the downloading Outlook.com emails) or IMAP, but I know it does for exchange.
So in my mind your easiest way of dealing with this to retain Outlook 2016 is to - backup your existing PST file (should include contacts)
- remove the existing account or simply create a new Outlook profile
- Add your outlook.com email using exchange which will/should authenticate using oauth2
- The attach your backed up PST file to the new outlook profile and either continue using as is and transfer emails to the separate PST folders, or you could move all your existing email/folders back into the new email folder group
They give you 15GB of storage on outlook.com so not a lot of reason not to use it...
The other slightly trickier need here is the autocomplete list of typed email addresses, they probably won't come over automagically, but it can be done...
This job will be easier in a separate Outlook profile, which you can lock on when your happy...

Thanks king1. Will look into that. Another question then.
If I bought Microsoft 365 would it pick up/ take over my present Office 2016 and get my Outlook working again?
Would then move to IMAP as it is handy seeing emails on my phone.
Looks like Office 2021 is the latest stand alone Office available. Have they stopped it in favour of 365?
My wife occasionally uses Publisher but that's the only app apart from Outlook that we use.
Have had a look around. Might see how the free Outlook works out, seeing as how I go online to view my gmail account. Don't like the look of what happens if I stop the 365 sub!

I wouldn't want to guarantee that...
if the syncing between phone/PC is what you are looking for then you definitely should be setting up email as an outlook.com account rather than pop/imap. This way it can also sync contacts and calendar etc whereas IMAP syncs email only.
BUT as mentioned above you will need to backup and re-upload your existing email/folders (from pop?) to the new setup.
This method will probably deal with the oAuth requirement better as well...

That new outlook has been causing countless issues for people.
I have found that trustpower(now mercury) email accounts no longer work with it, among other things.

Well,I got Mailwasher working, so I can see any incoming emails and delete any I need to.
Also got my Cashbook program working, as I've discovered I can still send emails from my Outlook 2016, so set Cashbook to use Outlook to send invoices and it works. Not that I'm doing much work now, learning to live on super!
I'll stay with the free Outlook for now as it is handy for seeing emails on my phone which I couldn't do if I'd downloaded them. And the free Outlook also shows my address book people on selecting who to send to.
Thanks for all the help.
