Shop Pay automated system
#1
Yesterday I received a message through my cellphone advising me that delivery of an order from a company in the Auckland region was delayed because of 'missing numbers in the delivery address. Strangely as I received the message while driving the car's infotainment system read the message out to me but no record of that message remained later?? I guessed the missing number was the lack of an RD route number as I had a delivery delayed for this reason just a couple of weeks back. Also the Auckland company had been in contact when I first placed the order to request payment of the rural surcharge which hadn't been included in their checkout process. Incidentally the purchase process happened a lot faster than I was expecting as no address or delivery info was required and the order was done and dusted way sooner than would normally be the case.

It seems to me that my delivery address info, and credit card data, used in this order was taken from the Shop Pay database. I received the usual request to install the Shop pay app after I made this order to allow me to track the item but as this was already accessible through the 'Sweetspot' delivery system I didn't take the bait.

On investigating further it seems that Shop Pay is part of the Shopify platform. So, having now cancelled my profile (address, etc.) on the Shop Pay website how can I prevent this database again harvesting my purchasing and delivery information when I next purchase from a seller with a Shopify enabled checkout.

We are rural but for international orders I don't include this detailing in my delivery details as it's not required, likewise for a 'free delivery' purchase. For some domestic orders I will opt for P.O. Box or an alternative urban address to minimise delivery costs but this wasn't even available during my recent purchase, so I was stuck with paying an extra rural surcharge.

Can an of the more tech savvy amongst our members shed some light on this situation, and whether I'm correct in my assumptions of what's going on?

many scams start off that way, you're sure its legit?

Beyond that i'm not really familiar with shoppay or shopify for that matter...
This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

Nor me, sorry.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

Shop Pay is part of the Shopify platform which many, if not most, e-commerce websites use for their layout and checkout. Shopify is a 'software as a service' model where you pay them for server space, transaction fees and as it seems the Shop Pay facility.

Having checked with our web designer who also does Shopify based websites (ours uses OpenCart) the collection of customer data 'for faster future checkouts' is promoted by Shopify. Our web designer is confident that the security of their database is up to speed but my main issue is that the address data 'harvested' by Shop Pay in our case wasn't applicable or preferred for a subsequent purchase as it lead to:
a.) Our rural address being used for a seller that requested a rural surcharge once the sale completed. I usually opt for an alternative address to avoid such charges.
b.) The address details on the item lacked the Rural Delivery run number so I was then contacted to correct this shortfall of info to avoid further delivery delay.
c.) I choose between 3 different delivery addresses to avoid rural charges if preferred, and whether the delivery service can do so to our PO Box. The automation in play by Shop Pay denies my the ability to 'customise' my delivery address as required for individual purchases.

I have now deleted/cancelled my Shop Pay account but will now have to check that address details aren't again harvested when I next purchased through a Shopify based website. In many cases Shopify is not readily identified within a website's displayed data.

If you have received emails requesting you download the Shop Pay app following a purchase in order to more easily track your deliveries in one place this is an indication that the transaction has been processed by Shopify and Shop Pay, and that it is too late to rectify the situation. In my case I do not download any e-commerce or payment related apps to my phone as I complete all such business on my laptop due to my doubts about security in smartphone transactions. In the last case I already had tracking available via the GoSweetSpot CourierPost system so ignored the Shop Pay prompt.

Seems my issues with Shop Pay aren't unique. A few 'interesting' experiences posted here.

My only experience with Shop Pay was when I "bought" something from what turned out to be a scam site.   It was one of those fake sites that is instantly created when you search for something on line, in my case an obscure bit of homeware.   I paid using Visa, a Shop Pay box appeared to take my details and on completion the whole site disappeared.
