Last night I was about to start my backup when there were several pings and messages in the bottom right corner of the screen. They said that I had been hacked, had several viruses (3, 5 or 7), that my computer subscription to Norton, and to McAfee had expired, and wanting me to pay them. I have not used McAfee for at least 10 years, and Norton is on auto payment. I scanned using Malwarebytes, and Norton: both were clear.
A message has just popped up telling me that McAfee payment has failed!
Th originating site is: "cupf1v0hubcc73bffrhg.mergechainsolutions.co.in"
How do I get rid of this?

Yes its a scam
Most likely it's a misappropriated browser notification, a semi useful browser function.
In the same notification you should be able to identify the browser, usually Chrome of Edge. Once identified, you can go into the browsers settings, search for notifications, and you should be able find the errant website listed.
Usually resetting that particular sites permissions, or specifically blocking that particular website will sort it

Often these types of pop-ups are actually in the temp Internet files, once the temp internet is cleaned out they disappear.

Talking about new bugs, I have one on farcebook, that turns out to be an old one, just one I have never encountered before, and interestingly, it only appears on this tablet. When I type a post the first letter is highlighted and promptly disappeared, then letters get jumbled. I followed all the help instructions, but none of them worked so now I just use my laptop for farcebook. Which has a good upside, it limits the time I spend on there!

Years ago,
Adblock Plus used to do that. Maybe with some sites trying to stop ad blockers, maybe it's up to its old tricks again ?
If you have Adblock Plus - Try Disabling it.

Ublock origin is a good alternative to adblock plus
