Why the devil are our politicians apparently incapable of taking a long term view...

Because they are locked into the capitalist ideology and are unwilling to give up their dreams of achieving personal wealth, in exchange for a radical change to a system that supports equitable delivery of services, paid for by equitable taxation.
Simple really.

All they care about is themselves and maybe immediate family, in the jobs they occupy they are being paid to care about the rest of us as well through delivering good services, however "productivity and efficiency" goals do not result in this being the case.
Saving money as a priority is not the way to run complicated systems like the Health system.
It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

Nordic countries have a system which is a mixture of socialism, & capitalism. Their high taxes cover education, health, social welfare etc. etc. & their popualtion consistently features at the top of the 'happiest people' surveys. No system is perfect but theirs is pretty good & I wonder if they're the happiest due to the removal of the constant stress of having to provide healthcare, education etc etc.
You'd think that other countries might follow suit as far as possible; you'd think that politicans - who are after all, elected to do their best for all their people might just change their ways. Developing a social conscience might be a good start...

Well "Everyone must go", last one out turn off the lights! The Demolition Coalition is doing its best to wreck the country sector by sector. Perhaps they can provide their newly created unemployed with one way tickets out of the country to somewhere run by more capable people .Personally I would rather have higher taxes provided the money was used to benefit the people who needed it; especially in Health and Education.

Yes, I think most of us would agree with that as long as they used it where most needed. Most of our govts seem incapable of taking a long term view - or perhaps they're just unwilling.
