Typical Microsoft! Disabling Windows Recall is Breaking File Explorer

This may be of use to someone on forum

"Earlier this year, we were caught off-guard by Microsoft when they came up with a creepy move to spy on users with a new AI-powered feature called Recall.

When active, the feature takes snapshots of the screen a user is working on, to then catalog it, and serve for later fetching as a scrollable timeline. It was supposed to be disabled by default, but, it appears, Microsoft has gone back to enabling it by default.

The 24H2 release installs Recall on all PCs, not just Copilot+ PCs. But, that's not all. Recall also breaks an important Windows feature if someone tries to remove it."

It's not the least charm of a theory that it is refutable. The hundred-times-refuted theory of "free will" owes its persistence to this charm alone; some one is always appearing who feels himself strong enough to refute it - Friedrich Nietzsche

Actually, that Statement about auto-installing is False. Got two computers here, both with 24H2, and for recall to work it requires Copilot. If you don't allow copilot to run, guess what - Recall cant work either. So cant turn off recall since its not there.

Neither of the computers have recall installed, and they are direct downloads from MS. One is a fresh install ( ISO from MS, the other an upgrade from 23H2), one has an older CPU. While I did enable Copilot, there is still no sign of recall.

It's a LOT of scaremongering -- have a read, especially the section relating to Saving snapshots   --   Recall

If and when it turns up on 24H2 I'll let you know if it's trying to send out data, as the Eset Security firewall set to interactive is excellent - NOTHING is allowed out unless I let it. Big Grin

WT, when installing 24H2, did you allow KB5044284 and KB5044030 to load or were you able to stop them from downloading (if so how). I am able to install 24H2 happily until the two KBs above decide it is time for them to install too. That's when it all hits the fan for me and I have to roll back to 23H2.

All updates were downloaded and installed with no problems. ( Via Windows update)

The KB's KB5044284 and KB5044030 are not specific to Windows 11 24H2.

Just checked on a W11 23H2 and the same updates (numbers) have gone in without problems.

My Office Computer has just done its weekly full backup, so may try doing a manual upgrade on Sunday.

Edited Next Day: Again upgraded another Computer, this time from the update assistant -- Upgraded to 24H2, with all updates, no problems and NO RECALL installed or visible anywhere. Only thing I had to change was the sharing settings as per my other thread in saying it was broken.
