Win 11 Update
|
they're up to 24H2 now if i'm not mistaken but they may not be offering the updates to some older hardware if they have known compatibility issues.
my intel 8th gen laptop is on 23H2 but I am offered 24H2 here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software.../windows11 pretty sure this will be a we're not confident enough to update you automatically, but if you choose to do so yourself, all power to you but be it on your head, kinda thing... This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

You mean, I need to reinstall Win11 and reinstall all my programs?
Yes, it's an old machine, about 10 years old. It's running OK happy with it as it is.

Looks like you are still on Windows 10 and that version will be no longer supported after sometime in 2025. You will need to go to at least Windows 11 version 23H2. If your system is 10 years old you will probably need to use a work around using Rufus 4.6 to get installed. Don't even think about going to version 24H2! It's full of install bugs.
The install can be made keeping your programs and settings.

It could also turn around and say it can't upgrade because of compatibility issues or some such etc This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.

Both version 22H2 of Windows 11 Home and Pro and version 21H2 of Windows 11 Enterprise and Education and IoT Enterprise will be going end of life on the 8th of October, 2024
So basically you just need to upgrade to a newer Version, I'd make an image ( as a backup) 1st then run the Windows update manually, there should be an option to upgrade to the newer version. Link to MS Site

I am quite sure that my PC is NOT hardware compatible with Win 11 and used Rufus method (recommended by the previous Press F1 members) to download the copy of Windows 11 for the installation.
Do I still need to use Rufus to download the Update Installation file from MS, or it's not necessary? Read somewhere that it's not necessary now???

Just tried it. Installed 22H2 on a non compatible hardware PC. Straight away it was saying you need to update the OS to teh newer version BUT did'nt show the option to download /upgrade.
Made another USB drive with Rufus - bypass setup, with 24H2, attached the drive ran setup, unticked the check for updates, and it installed fine. A while back when doing a upgrade Via windows update from the previous version it did show and also failed with not compatible etc. Suggest you 1st make a complete image with something like Macrium Reflect, download the 24H2 ISO, use Rufus to change and try as I did above. IF you simply download the ISO from Microsoft and try to use that its a 99% chance it WILL fail as Rufus bypasses the requirements inbuilt in the ISO.

Thanks, Wainuitech.
1. What are the Rufus -bypass setup, other than untick the check for updates? 2. When running from within Windows, to update, - just click the setup.exe file? 3. Is Macrium Reflect free to try? How easy it is to do a backup?
Searched and found this site: https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-ins...trictions/
You reckon it is OK to follow and set up Rufus? Cheers BTW, how do I create a web link? Used to be able to but not now! I had to copy and paste the whole URL like the above.

I have some videos someplace showing how to use it from install to finish, I'll see if I can locate them and post some links.
Rufus, yes the link provided only the top option to remove Requirements. Depending on your Computer if doing a clean install you sometimes have to change the boot method to MBR on Rufus as the BIOS may not that the default. ( See Pic) Macrium, took away the free version, Not to sure exactly how many functions are disabled in trials, BUT you can alway still use the Free Version 8 from various places, still works perfectly fine. https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details...ition.html Before Imaging make sure you make a recovery USB BEFORE doing the image as if its needed bit later afterwards. ![]()

Good morning.
Don't think I'll do a fresh reinstall of the OS. It's too much hassle for this senior citizen. ![]() Will just do an Update - meaning, will run the .exe from within Windows and keep all my programs and settings, if it works that way!

Doing an in-place upgrade from a USB ( via the setup) is fine.
Two things to make sure of: 1. You take a full image backup before you begin - It can sometimes fail and totally screw the OS. Having an image, you simply put that back - nothing lost. 2. Make sure Rufus has made the USB with 24H2 AND bypassed the requirements, if they are not bypassed it wont install normally. Cant find the video I mentioned, Did you want them or are you OK to do an Image ?

Never done any image with Macrium. How easy (or difficult) to use it? Would be nice to have a tutorial to follow, if any.
I still need the USB (created by Rufus) to do the update, right?

Imaging with Macrium is easy.
If you download and install from MajorGeeks link in previous post, then attach an External USB Drive thats enough space to take the whole working System you're good to go. I did a quick Video 3 1/2 minutes ( bit rough) but I installed Macrium - USB 256GB drive attached, image - open the image ( mount it) to check its worked, then Unmount the drive. Link at end of post. This image only took under 4 minutes from start to finish but theres nothing else on the install, so the more data /programs your computer has the longer it will take. Once finished, unplug the USB drive you just used, then do the Upgrade to 24H2. Once you have the Image - IF everything turns custard with an upgrade at least you have an original backup. Macrium can do many things this is only a tiny part. IF you want to make a bootable USB Flash drive ( I suggest you do) from the program top left click on rescue media -plug in the drive and follow the prompts. ( or ask). Rough Video -- https://streamable.com/9z1m4u Re-Reading your last reply -- YES you still need the RUFUS 24H2 to do an upgrade.
