Luxon defends election changes after Judith Collins raises problems
#1
I'd like to think they might see sense, but if this idea is as it seems, likely to gain them more votes they'll stick with it. Very interesting that Judith Collins raised it though, when it's surely those groups who are possibly more likely to vote left.

"Judith Collins pointed out that the proposals were inconsistent with people's rights, & that 100,000 or more people  could be directly or indirectly disenfranchised by rules banning  enrolment in the final 13 days before an election, with younger people & Maori, Asian & Pasifika most likely to be affected."

Depriving young people who come of voting age with that period of the chance to vote for the first time. Pretty sure that's what this conservative very white government is intending. Probably ACT sponsored...

Govt is claiming that this is to ensure that a final election result is achieved sooner, however some within their own party disagree.

"Undemocratic & a breach of human rights. That's what most experts & officials think of the Govts proposed changes to electoral law."

Why should they though?  I'm pretty damned sure any delays introduced by last minute voter registrations will be dwarfed by prolonged coalition negotiations

There's also the delay related to collecting and counting 90,000+ overseas votes. Those seem to be managed okay so what exactly is the problem for a few late enrolling NZ voters?

It gives this govt an opportunity to chance their arm by trying to make changes. Which will be in their favour... Rolleyes

Folks were warned in advance and told to get back to nz.

Much of those you're referring to as "dead wood" are integral to maintaining social services but I guess at the rate Kiwis are exiting the country lately that will be a shrinking need for the coming years.

One man's "dead wood" is another's social support services, but if you don't give a toss about those less 'entitled' than yourself your priorities may well vary accordingly.
