Catskill Mountains is a very interesting place, Rip Wan Winkel went to sleep there and Woodstock is also close.
David Bowie had a holiday home there, he said spartan, stark and mysterious was his impression. In the 1850's onwards it was a place where the Jewish people of New York went for holidays to resorts before cheaper transport gave them other options later in the century and it never regained popularity, like Vermont and New Hampshire it has spectacular autumn colour displays from the trees. Turns out that it was from 1920 to late 1960 that resorts in the Catskills were popular with Jewish people from New York City, it was known as the Borscht Belt and here's some more info:

I've heard of most of them & seen some on TV - Joan Rivers, Billy Crystal, Danny Kaye & of course the Marx brothers. The prejudiced bigots of the day refused membership in Country clubs to Jewish people so the Jews started their own clubs; they became the Boscht belt.

Yes, apparently there are more Jewish people in New York than Tel Aviv, which probably explains the support for Israel by America and supply of arms against the Palestinians.
