https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/3608490...eep-lights Interesting analogy in bringing "keeping the lights on" into the headline considering the state of our electricity and gas sectors going into an election year may actually put our energy suppliers struggle to do just that. And expect Shane Jones to be squealing like a stuck pig promising the world and delivering FA all in energy relief the way to election day.
Nicky No Boats will just keep beating the cost cutting drum while NZ circles the plughole. The woman really doesn't have a clue how economics actually function and is treating the government books as she would a housekeeping budget without understanding her actions are actually contributing to rather than solving the country's economic woes.

To cover up their determined campaign to avoid supporting sustainable alternatives, and to continue supporting the fossil fuels industries.
Dinosaurs. One term government.

oh yea tmp and the greens running the labour party will sort the country’s issues out The way things are going downhill for the current government Labour probably won't need TPM or the Greens come election time, or maybe only one...

You know heisenbery? I really don't care who starts us on a path to acknowledging climate change with REAL ACTION, just so long as someone does! The science is clear, the models are frightening, and yet this lot are more interested in 'over here, look over here' because that is where the money is.
It is sickening.

Frankly, the way this lot are going, virtually anyone would be an improvement. These are not people who are concerned with the well being of the people of this country - unless they happen to be wealthy, of course.
These are NOT good people.

I saw a photo of Shane Jones standing next to a mountain of coal at the Huntly power station...Indonesian coal. He was almost line of sight away from Rotoraro mine, which the station was designed to run on, and is still producing coal. The newest coal generator in the big building is 40 years old, the oldest 50 years old, well past use by date, and they started to decommission it in 2012. He wants to run the coal units to 2035, there are no parts available for these machines, and the company/ies that made them probably went broke in the GFC. The power station is like the Cook Straight Ferries and the Fire Appliances, pushed well beyond service life and somebody elses fault when something goes wrong.

so it is true we send our coal overseas because its more valuable and import cheap coal? Seems completely illogical

How ironic, that's exactly what has happened since National took office - logic would suggest we go with the option that gets us climate change action as well

The Chinese own the light switch in Wellington so borrowing overseas might be in order. Maybe borrow from HSBC.
"In July 2008, the network was purchased by CK Infrastructure Holdings Limited (formerly known as Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Limited) and Power Assets Holdings Limited (formerly known as Hongkong Electric) to create Wellington Electricity Lines Limited (Wellington Electricity). Following this purchase, Wellington Electricity has re-established its corporate office and operates its business systems for the independent operation and control of the network"

Our economy is the product of a broken system, one we humans invented, and one we keep patching up and panel beating despite all the evidence that tells us it's proper fumfookled. But the moment anyone suggests we could design a better one - with all the figures and strategies and research that underpins those new possibilities, some silly self interested dolt screeches blue murder that 'the sky is falling'...
Still I guess that involves less thinking than actually considering new ideas.

Over a decade ago, Portugal decriminalsied drugs. They now have a far lower rate of deaths from overdose; they did things properly & set up rehabs clinics etc etc.
We could perhaps learn from that.
Finland has a fairly high rate of taxes, used to pay for education, health etc. etc. And also year after year, the world's happiest people.
We could learn from that as well.
Teaching schoolkids empathy & perhape even meditation wouldn't hurt either.
It makes sense to do what we can to encourage the better side of human nature, as far as posible.
We don't seem to be all that good at common sense though.
