it is actually less than 1%.  And it is 1% of those infected may die.  Not everyone in general.  700 people a year die of flu.  10000 die of cancer.  380 people a year die from car accidents.  

If you look at the number of covid infections in NZ vs deaths that mortality is even lower especially when you consider the majority of people who died were already old and infirm.  Hell one person shot by police is in the official covid deaths

Well it's entirely helpful that the numbers we have had are the direct result of a relatively speaking, well managed pandemic response.  Had that not been the case or things turn for the worse in NZ then your 1% is still going to be a lot of people dying... 

Some would say only one preventable death is too many...

We can't save everyone.  Would be nice if we could  but we cant.  You could say we could ban all cars as they kill 380 people to year -  many of those deaths preventable.
