If every candidate lost their deposit, it might awaken one or two (I'm an optimist) to the realisation that only the ultra gullible will vote FOR someone. All the rest sort of fall in to office on the basis that they are the lesser evil, or alternatively they are positioned on the ballot paper near the middle where "eyes shut random stabs" are most likely to fall.
