The whole point of this rocket is to reuse the whole thing, including the upper stage, so no junk in space!

Not exactly, the rocket is a test vehicle slapped together as fast as possible and as cheaply as possible to test various systems that have never flown before.
I would call it a success, we still dont know what happened to the second stage, but it appears it lost communication with the ground and as a safety precaution when this happens, the flight termination system activates blowing it up.
