I sure can't afford a weeks pay on a phone

Save up for one then. The problem with 2nd hand phones is they are sometimes ( often) out of date or there's a fault with them, hence people getting rid of.  There was a article on Fairgo the other week, iphone 6 out of date and the banks app wont work anymore.

Basically throwing away your money on someone's rubbish. Looking around here, there's a few older Androids, wouldn't even give them away as they are unreliable, slow as a wet week even with a new install or to out of date for some apps (like you mentioned yours is).

The latest Android is 14, (15 is on the way) so really anything ( at a guess) older that 12 and it will soon be out of date for some apps.

$384 a week. Thats' before bills are paid.
Ok no mortgage but sill power, rates, insurances, net, ph food, drs and 2 loans already.
Anyway got a second hand Oppo now, happy with it, Android 13.
My last phone was second hand, 7 years old. It was wonderful for a long long time.
It is NOT necessary to always have a brand new phone.
