The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?
If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

so that is to do with requiring modern authentication /oauth2 when signing in,  this is the function in the setup whereby after entering user/pass and hitting the go button, you are directed to a Microsoft signin form in the browser to complete a signin of the microsoft account.  Once done the email client authenticates correctly and everyone is happy.

Now I am not sure if Outlook 2016 will support this for POP (I am assuming you use POP based on the downloading Outlook.com emails) or IMAP, but I know it does for exchange.

So in my mind your easiest way of dealing with this to retain Outlook 2016 is to
  • backup your existing PST file (should include contacts)
  • remove the existing account or simply create a new Outlook profile
  • Add your outlook.com email using exchange which will/should authenticate using oauth2
  • The attach your backed up PST file to the new outlook profile and either continue using as is and transfer emails to the separate PST folders, or you could move all your existing email/folders back into the new email folder group

They give you 15GB of storage on outlook.com so not a lot of reason not to use it...

The other slightly trickier need here is the autocomplete list of typed email addresses, they probably won't come over automagically, but it can be done...

This job will be easier in a separate Outlook profile, which you can lock on when your happy...

This world would be a perfect place if it wasn't for the people.
