The policies that Trump plans to roll out are going to make for economic hardship for the very people who voted for him. Tariffs will ramp up inflation. Deportation of immigrants who do a large portion of the menial tasks and food production workforce will raise prices as wages for those that do those jobs rise will increase the price of food and services. A government driven by negative sentiment will foster crime and social disconnection with public services needing increased inputs so more expense.

The similarities with our own governments promotion of extractive industries will see the US leapfrog China's emissions with manufacturing and energy industries based on last century's technologies. Make no mistake, China's transition to renewable power generation is happening at pace and this together with the BRICS alliance will present a challenge to the US's international economic and political standing while their leadership is too anchored in the past to realise it until too late.

We like most of the world are viewing the coming Trump presidency with extreme apprehension and with good reason. Hold on 'cause we're in for a rough ride for the next few years.
I think the media have painted Trump supporters as a minority fringe group, who are all conspiracy theorists, clearly not.
Tariffs are good for the economy, NZ used to have them too, then they all got lifted in the 80's (under Labour) and cheap Chinese goods flooded the market and NZ business's went under.
Inflation has been on the rise under Biden and now that will change.
Funny thing is if Tariffs are so bad, how come Biden chose to keep them?
Tariffs are taxation as goods enter the country and are intended to protect a country's own production and manufacturing sectors. Those tariffs will increase the prices that Americans have to pay for those goods which will result in inflation. It's hardly rocket science but I did note that the MAGA individuals who were asked about tariffs really did struggle to understand the strategy beyond the import throttling effects.

As you state NZ had tariffs in place as a protection mechanism for our farmers until the 1980s when we moved away from protectionist policies in order to foster more palatable trade agreements. Tariffs are now regarded as an outdated and crude economic mechanism but like so many constructs in the US they are still stuck in their old ways and see it as their perceived 'safe place'.

Tariffs will result in economic isolation for the US with more negative effects than they have advantages. If they're happy to coddle their outdated manufacturing industries they're entitled to do so but in doing so they run the risk of being left behind technologically than they already are.
