The jobs aren't there. And that state of affairs will only get worse.
Governments deny it, but that is the reality.

I'm white too. Which meant all kinds of privileges, that I am not afraid to acknowledge. And yes, Winz was designed as a safety net, but the reality is that safety net has become an intergenerational support system for people who will never be fully employed, never be adequately educated or adequately covered by our health system.
As for the gangs, the only way to deal with that issue to to remove the causes, the social drivers that created them, and maintain them. They exist as a response to social factors - those same factors that make Winz support way more than an emergency alternative.
Owning a home these days is a huge privilege, and a hideously expensive one. Having a family supported by one income is also a privilege and a burden. Having a job is a privilege, and a burden. Those coins have two sides, just as not having a job, not having a stable family situation, not having a secure home, not having education or good health care - all have two sides. There is a certain freedom in not having those responsibilities, but there is also the terror of not having them.
Would you swap? Would you give up being white, a breadwinner, a family man, your mortgage... and become free of all those responsibilities, but have to live on the dole. Under the Winz thumb?
I know the answer to that one. Ask yourself that question though. It's that old story, walk a mile in their shoes, don't just judge from the outside.
