VCR to PC

I always used MPEG2 PAL 720x576 but that's because I was burning to DVD. Whatever the authoring software was (who remembers I haven't even had an optical drive in years) it let me just convert to DVD format without reencoding as long as the source was encoded correctly. I remember having a lot of trouble finding a way to avoid a second encoding step which lost more quality until I found the right authoring tool setting (might've been nero, used to come with the drives).
