It was an interesting part of the pandemic, the mask thing. My take from it was that the promotion of masking up was designed to protect, primarily people like me, aged with vulnerabilities on the health front. And it did upset a lot of people who found it intrusive, political, and uncomfortable. And frightening, but they rarely confessed that.
Masking used in the appication of power and authority over others is not really entirely different. It's a bit like gang patches. And we treat those in interesting ways here in Aotearoa. So it reinforces the feeling of personal power, while hiding the identity of the individual wielding it. Protecting thrm from the consequences of their own actions.
Protection... For those who need it.

Without protest from anyone who sees it.
There might be something to be said for naming & shaming- & sharing an image without costume - of those within ICE who are responsible for what is an abduction.
I think the way police wear an identifying number is a really good thing. But then we live in a very different community with very different expectations of our police and other enforcement services. It must be deeply unsettling to live in a state where those can no longer be relied upon to serve the people.
All the more so, if you'd voted for Trump not realising where it was likely to lead. That must be a very bitter pill indeed.
in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)
