A prisoner voting ban shows again how few checks there are on Parliamentary power
#27
I think its crystal clear that there will always be some people who are so dangerous to others they will have to be kept locked up.

That does not mean though that every person who committs a crime should also be locked up. It does not mean that most people can't change, sometimes with help, sometimes on their own.

Removing the right to vote is just anothet weapon in the bash bash bash response so favoured by, usually right wing politicians. Why the hard right cannot - or perhaps will not, comprehend that bash bash bash does not invariably work is perhaps because most people may not understand that, & also because most people tend to want some sort of revenge.
Not invariably the best idea.

We could do worse than identify the causes & act accordingly.
And one of those causes as we now know thanks to the Dunedin study, is that the human brain isn't fully developed - specifically those areas which govern impulse control & consequences - until our mid twenties.

And now that we know that, one of these fine days we may need to change some aspects of our society. Probably an especially thorny prospect, that one...
in order to be old & wise, you must first be young & stupid. (I'm still working on that.)
