did thunderbird do an update recently? check the apps list in settings for the install date...  

had a client with a similar issue with their hotmail account earlier in the week.  Worked fine in the Outlook (New) app when I tried it, but couldn't get it to go in thunderbird.  I got the feeling TB may have put out a buggy release...
I'm running TB Version 128.10.0esr (64 bit). Last update was May 2 and it's only in the past couple of days that the problem has occurred.
